  • League Night Recap for 8/9/16

Games played: Getaway, Metallica, Medieval Madness, Iron Man, Theater of Magic.

The league night of August 9th was the third of the season, but only the second I’d been able to attend, so I kept getting mixed up about whether it was the second or third night and having to be straightened out on that.  It was a disorienting kind of night for me.  I’ve lived in the neighborhood for 17 years now, and just can’t get used to the sudden vanishing of most of the 2000 block of Michigan Avenue (across from our league venue). The demolition of the block happened between the second and third league meeting, so this was the first time many league members got to see the empty hole in the landscape.  I used to buy comics in that building, sometimes; I used to eat dinner with my parents on special occasions in that building; more often, I used to stand in front of that building waiting for a bus to take me to campus for grad school.  I know it (knew it) like I know my house.  And now it’s gone, just to remind me that I am old and grad school was a long time ago.

    The 2000 block, razed.
The 2000 block, or perhaps I should call it the minus-2000 block.

    But I digress.  Pinball, right?

Some pinball was, most certainly, played.  Matt had to come late again due to work and had me and Mike organize the start of things.  (That will be happening at tonight’s league meeting, too, and seems to be the new normal.)   The night began with Jason’s group being put on Metallica.  Jason, who said he had not played Metallica before, played a blockbuster game, something in the high 200 millions if I remember correctly.  Joseph was in Jason’s group too, and had his best ever game on Metallica, which would have been more impressive had it not been something like a third of Jason’s score.  Between the two of them, their game lasted so long that my group ended up having to skip past them and come back later.

Chris and Jason playing MM and Metallica.
Chris tears up Medieval Madness while Jason tears up Metallica.

Speaking of tearing up games, Chris ended up battling for the kingdom in his game of Medieval Madness, though unsuccessfully.  I’m sure he didn’t go home crying over his score, in any case.

For some reason the random number generator decided we should play Getaway too.  This seems to be the season of Getaway.  At least we won’t be playing it again tonight – probably.

We were supposed to play Addams Family, but apparently something catastrophically broke on it while the first group was playing (I don’t recall what).  I wanted to declare that we’d play T3 instead, since it has never been played in league since being installed, but the right ramp was registering only about 50% of the time.  I thought it was still “good enough” by league standards, but Mike insisted he didn’t want the league to play something that was known to be defective.  I agreed to do a random draw between three games Mike thought were working fine.  One of them was Theater of Magic.  I had in the back of my mind that something was wrong with ToM but couldn’t remember what, and when I mentioned that, no one else seemed to remember anything wrong with it.  So we did the random drawing and Theater of Magic ended up being selected.

When my group got upstairs to play it, it all came back to me.  The left flipper was permanently slightly raised, meaning that the two flippers were not even close to even and it was nearly impossible to shoot anything on the right side of the playfield.  More importantly for me (and many others), it made shooting the center ramp extremely difficult.  I ended up bombing out with a score of under 100 million.  When I went back downstairs to complain, Adam said he didn’t see what my problem was, since he and Chris both scored over a billion.  I was dumbfounded until I remembered that the pros just shoot the left loop over and over.  In response I can only attempt to claim the moral high ground in that I was trying to play the game as intended.  That said, we are scheduled to play ToM again tonight and I may not be quite so wedded to “how it was intended” this time.

After this grueling night of long-playing and cockeyed games, we all agreed that we were in no shape to go to Theio’s, and we all went straight home to bed.  If you believe that, I have a vacant lot on Michigan Avenue to sell you.  Actually, several of the Theio’s regulars went over there as usual.  If you haven’t been coming with us on our Theio’s forays, you should!  Just ask Mike or me after league if you’d like to tag along, because we just about always go.

See you all tonight at 7, I hope!  Oh right, this is the part where I’m supposed to link to the photo gallery (though I don’t actually have any additional photos this time) and the results for the night.

  • League Night Recap for 7/26/16

Games played: Junk Yard, Getaway, The Addams Family, Tales of the Arabian Nights, The Walking Dead.

July 26 was the second night of Season 7, but the first night for me and Joseph.  We had missed the first night due to a family vacation, and did makeup games when we got back. For me, Season 7 got off to an unusual start, as Matt asked me to run league night while he was on vacation himself.  It was my first time running the league by myself!  I would need to be very organized and do everything just right to impress all my friends.

Russell warming up on the new Metallica.
Russell warming up on the new Metallica.

Well – not all my friends.  I knew that a lot of people would be missing league night because they would be traveling to Pittsburgh the next day for Pinburgh, and didn’t want to have too much pinball fun.  Joseph and I would be off to Pinburgh too, but we understand that others may not be as tour ready as we are.  So several people, we already knew, would not be coming.  We were expecting a light crowd.  We were not expecting only four people, but that’s how many people were there at 7 p.m.  I began wondering if this would be the first ever night with only one group.

I had arrived early to start checking whether the games Matt had selected would be playable.  We had to scratch a series of games.  T3 wasn’t registering the right ramp.  The newly-arrived Demo Man (which I still have not played) played fine for about 30 seconds until a ball ended up in the Retina Scan saucer and would not kick out.  Indiana Jones was resetting almost every game.  Monster Bash’s scoop was still kicking out straight down the middle.  I ended up using a random number generator to fill out the card with games that seemed to be working well enough.  One of the games it selected was Junk Yard.  I felt an ominous shiver, but shrugged it off.  At Matt’s direction, we would be playing five games regardless of how many people showed up.

We had a couple of new members (new to me at least), Tim and Steve.  (No, a different Steve from the Steve who played last season.)  Steve was in my group, and he let me know that he discovered the league by seeing the flyers at Pinball Pete’s.  That’s how Joseph and I first learned about the league too, except in our case, we saw the flyers at Pete’s in Ann Arbor, which is en entirely sensible way of learning about something that happens a couple of blocks from my house in Lansing.

I decided to stall and see if anyone else showed up, and finally at about 7:15 four more people rolled in more or less at the same time, so we divided into two groups.  League went by very fast because I made sure the groups started a couple of machines apart, and so there was never any waiting for machines.  At one point the other group sent an emissary to ask me for a ruling.  Someone had, of course, slam tilted Junk Yard.  (I heard later that it was Tim.)  I ruled that the perpetrator would receive zero and everyone else would get however many more balls were affected, as compensation.  (I was reminded later that Matt usually allows people the choice of compensation balls or restarting the entire game.  I had forgotten this, and having to make a decision in the moment, I defaulted to the rules that I use for my Avenue tournaments.)

Joseph demonstrating his usual method for freeing the ball from the sewer.
Joseph demonstrating his usual method for freeing the ball from the sewer.  So, you know, typical Junk Yard maintenance.

Then my group got to Junk Yard.  Russell was having an awful game.  The machine just was not cutting him any breaks.  His third ball drained (he was player 1 or 2, I forget which) and he grabbed hold of the machine and went to rage-tilt.  Imagine this next part in slow motion for best effect.  I lunged forward yelling “Russell, don’t…!” but it was too late.  The screen blanked and the game reset.  Russell took a moment to register what happened, while I glumly informed him that he slam tilted.  The rest of us got compensation balls, but in Junk Yard that’s pretty painful, since the bonus is very cumulative.  Joseph had been having an outstanding game by the end of Ball 2 and while he wasn’t sorry with his overall score, he wasn’t able to do much with his compensation ball.

When people finished, things dried up pretty quickly and we went home to pack for Pinburgh.  It really didn’t feel like a normal league night, with so many regulars missing and so few people attending in general.  The results aren’t available yet, between the delay in my getting the notebooks to Matt (when I got back from Pinburgh he left on another trip before I could give him the results, so he just got them last night) and the fact that so many people still need to do makeups.  There are a few more photos in the gallery.

Here’s hoping that we see a great turnout for tonight’s league!  Just don’t expect to play Demolition Man.  Last night it stole four out of five quarters Joseph and I tried feeding it, so we shut it off in disgust.

  • League Night Recap (Sort of) for 7/12 and Preview for 7/26

Unfortunately, I was not at the league night of July 12 (the Season 7 opener) due to a family vacation. From what I hear from Mike S., it was as hot as the devil’s armpit. Matt tried to mitigate this by having a “downstairs party” consisting of Iron Man, World Cup Soccer, Jack-Bot, Metallica, and Getaway, but it was still miserable, and people spent much of the night standing under the AC vent above the ATM.  I have also heard that some new people joined, and Matt expects yet more new people tomorrow.  It’s great to see the league growing.

Because I wasn’t there, I have no photos this time, though I should note that photos from the Rocket Robin tournament of 6/28 (which earned $160 for the Capital Area Humane Society) are now available in the photo gallery. I do have the results for the night for your perusal.

We’re now coming up on the second night of this season, tomorrow (today, really) at 7 p.m.  Matt will be absent this time, leaving me to run the circus for the first time.  We will be playing whichever of the following are currently cooperating: Indiana Jones, Tales of the Arabian Nights, World Cup Soccer, Getaway, Monster Bash, and Addams Family.  As usual, the number of games played will be determined by the number of players in attendance.

  • Chris Wins Again, Takes Home Sixth Trophy

The A division winners: 2nd place Mike, 1st place Chris, and 3rd place Adam.
The A division winners: 2nd place Mike, 1st place Chris, and 3rd place Adam.

Chris emerged from the second-chance bracket to defeat Mike S. and win Season 6 of the Lansing Pinball League.  The nail-biting finale required him to win two best-of-three rounds against Mike, whom he had already faced, and been defeated by, in the first round.  In a surprising twist, Adam and Chris – the favored finalists – met up in the second-chance bracket’s semi-finals, leading to a victory for undefeated league champion Chris and a third place finish for league newcomer Adam.

    Matt and Russell
Russell gets ready to dominate B division.

Meanwhile, Russell had his second consecutive B division victory, defeating Terry in the finals.  Matt came in third, resulting (surprisingly) in his first-ever Lansing Pinball League trophy.

Matt declared the bracket a “home-wrecker bracket,” since in the first round, I played Joseph, and Matt played his own roommate Aaron.  The two trolls (as I call them), Mike S. and Chris, also had to meet up in the first round.

    Chris and Mike
    The trolls.
    Chris playing while Mike cries.
Mike stands by while Chris puts a billion points on Getaway. Hey, it’s only pinball.

Although Medieval Madness was out of commission (Joseph said it appeared that someone “took the castle out and shot it”), the night still ran very long, with the end of things coming at about 1 a.m.  This was due in part to Chris’s repeated choice of the long-playing Austin Powers.  He must have really wanted to win to subject himself to that.  He also played a game of Getaway during the last round of the finals that finished just shy of a billion.  This is not to say that his victory over Mike was easy: at one point he had to make up a significant deficit on his third ball of Fish Tales in a do-or-die game.  Unfortunately for Mike, third ball miracles are something of a specialty for Chris (see his win over Alex on Lord of the Rings in the Season 4 finals).

After the end of the tournament, Adam and Sam were still up for going to Theio’s, so Joseph and I headed over to meet them after saying good night to Mike, who said he was too tired to come along.  When we got out of the car in Theio’s lot, who was standing there to greet us?  It was, of course, Mike, who had decided he really wanted to have a milkshake.  It was a short visit to Theio’s (everyone except Joseph just had dessert or milkshakes), but it still provided a fitting and traditional end to Season 6.

    Medieval Madness, sans castle
    Well, there goes my strategy.

And with that, Season 6 is a wrap, to be followed by the traditional post-season Zen (split flipper) tournament on May 24.  Thanks are in order to Matt for getting us through another successful season.  This league is the one that introduced me to the fun of competitive pinball and got me into the Michigan pinball scene.  I can honestly say, therefore, that Matt is responsible for something that has brought a very significant amount of joy into my life.  For that I cannot thank him enough.

I hope to see you all at the Zen Tournament!  Lots more photos of finals can be found in the photo gallery (which is plugged in to the Flickr LPL photo pool) and the complete results are also available here.

    League Night #8 of 8

Games played: Tales of the Arabian Nights, Indiana Jones, Medieval Madness, Lord of the Rings

    Adam plays Junk Yard.
Go on, Adam. Give it a good hard shove. You know you want to!

League Night #8 of Season 6 will no doubt go down in history as the longest league night to date.  Despite the fact that we played only 4 games (instead of 5 as had become more common this season), the night did not come to an end until after 10 p.m., as the final ball of the final game for the final group was played, by me, on Lord of the Rings.  I stood nearly alone, accompanied only by my loyal second Joseph, as everyone else had fled as soon as their ball was over.

We were scheduled to play The Simpsons Pinball Party, but just as I had a good game starting to open up after a terrible ball 1, my multiball was interrupted by the right flipper sticking in the upward position and refusing to come down.  Matt pointed out that if it lasted four hours, we would need to call for medical assistance.  Naturally the one time Simpsons doesn’t screw me one way, it screws me another.  The game was taken out of commission and replaced with Tales of the Arabian Nights.

    Greg and Kandus chatting.
“What are you supposed to do in Medieval Madness again?  Shoot the catapult?  Or was it the damsel ramp?” “I think you’re supposed to shoot the giant plastic castle.” “Oh… that makes sense.”

Meanwhile, Medieval Madness was playable but playing very long, because the drawbridge was staying in the upward position, making for a much safer than usual shot at the castle.  It’s a long playing game anyway and certain parties were dreading playing it for that reason; this made it even worse, and the average score skewed very high.  Lord of the Rings had some very long playing games that night too, not because of any malfunction but just because it’s Lord of the Rings.  The only saving grace is that Indiana Jones didn’t have any problems with the idol lock.

Unfortunately, the long playing games came on a night when, unusually for a league night, The Avenue had a show booked.  When the band started up, the opening cymbal hit was so loud that I thought someone had dropped a huge tray of dishes.  Everyone else was equally startled and several people jumped.  Matt did us all a great favor by running back to his house and getting earplugs, without which I don’t think I could have finished my game of Lord of the Rings.  Unfortunately, those not interested in the music had a strong incentive to leave as soon as they finished their games, which is part of why I was mostly on my own by the time I finished my long, long night.

    "Forget it, Mike. It's Castletown."
    “Forget it, Mike. It’s Castletown.”

On the up side, Rich from Nomad Kitchen once again brought back the Burger Challenge.  Everyone gets one try to put up the highest score on a game of Rich’s choice (this time, Getaway), and the winner gets a burger and fries from the kitchen.  Chris put up a huge score and left instructions that if he won, he wanted the second place person to get the burger unless it was Adam.  He did indeed win, his second victory in the Nomad Challenge, and Adam came in second (he has also previously won a Nomad Challenge), so according to Chris’s instructions, third place winner Mike got the burger IOU.

In just an hour or two, the final playoff tournament will be starting.  The point totals from Season 6 will be used to seed the A and B division tournaments.  Will Chris remain the undefeated victor?  Come by The Avenue tonight at 7 and find out!

    Season 6, meeting #6 of 8

Games played: Lord of the Rings, Iron Man, Monster Bash, Jack*Bot

    Mike's cake
It wasn’t really pink. That’s just the lighting (if you can call it that) in the alcove.

My first order of business for League Night on 4/12 was to have a private word with Matt and let him know that we had brought a surprise: a cake for Mike S., whose birthday was two days previous. Aaron jumped in and began giving me grief: how dare I make “unilateral pastry decisions” for the league? I hid the cake in more or less plain sight over near the back door and hoped Mike was too distracted to see it. When it came time to start league play, I interrupted Matt’s assignment of groups by carrying in the cake.

    Mike and his cake
No one except Aaron objected to my unilateral pastry decision.

Mike failed to blow out all the candles in one go, so I guess he won’t get his wish. Unless his wish was for delicious cake, since everyone seemed to agree that the cake was especially good. Thanks, Kroger bakery! Despite the excessive size of the cake (I thought more people would be there) it was three quarters gone by the end of the night and Mike took the rest home for his mom.

This was the least-attended night we have had in a while, largely due to the absence of the entire Grand Rapids crew (Jake, Sam, and Adam). Sam was out of town on a business trip, Jake had to work (a change in schedule that may affect the rest of the season for him), and Jake is Adam’s ride. As a result, we played only four games instead of what has become our customary five. Mike S. pleaded with Matt to add the fifth game (it would have been Theater of Magic) anyway, but it didn’t work.  He and Joseph suggested they would play it anyway and write their scores down in the scoring notebook. I don’t know if they did that or not since at the end of the night I instead stayed downstairs proving to myself that I can too play Jack*Bot.

    Mike blows out the candles
Mike failed to blow out all the candles, which is presumably why Austin Powers hasn’t been replaced yet.

This was a bit of an odd league night all around. The smaller number of games meant that everyone finished a lot earlier than usual, on top of this, for some reason people also didn’t hang around afterward. I guess the Grand Rapids crowd must be a good bit of our social glue, because everyone abandoned ship in a hurry until only Mike, Joseph, and I remained.  We went to Theio’s, just the three of us, which just wasn’t the same.

As of this writing Matt had not yet posted the scores due to pending makeup games, but you can also view more photos in the photo gallery. Tonight is the last regular night of the season which will determine seeding and divisions for the final playoffs. We are scheduled to play Medieval Madness, Simpsons Pinball Party, Indiana Jones, Lord of the Rings, Tales of the Arabian Nights and Addams Family (with the last two being contingency games), so we can all look forward to looking at Chris’s back all evening.

Sometimes I think my chicken purse is more popular than I am.
Sometimes I think my chicken purse is more popular than I am.

The night opened with Matt delayed by school obligations, leaving Aaron to get things organized.  Initially it appeared that this would be the first night in quite a while that we would not exceed 16 people, which would mean we would play only four games.  Then someone asked: did Aaron remember to count himself?  No, he didn’t.  But that still only got us to 16 exactly.  Did Aaron remember to count Matt, who was on the way?  He forgot that too, and so happily (for those of us who prefer longer league nights, anyway) we were bumped back up to a five game night.

    Matt, present and accounted for.
    Matt, present and accounted for.

I mentioned to Russell that he had played a prominent role in the last league night update.  He hadn’t read it, so I filled him in about my mysterious note to myself: “Everyone gave Russell a hard time about everything.”  Someone else asked, “What was everyone giving you s— about, Russell?”  He replied that, as usual, it was about his sliding games.  He asked plaintively why he gets so much grief about that when lots of other people move the games just as much.  I have no answer to that question, but I am sure his reputation for making “Russell Grooves” was bestowed affectionately.

Speaking of sliding, my group failed to warn Steve in time about the particular quirks of Junk Yard.  I saw him go to give it a shove and I thought, “I should probably tell him –” but by the time I my mouth caught up with my brain, he had already slam tilted.  We had to break the news that this meant he would be getting a zero, but he took it with surprising equanimity.

I was playing The Walking Dead when the news made it upstairs: we would not be playing World Cup Soccer.  Was the ramp awarding goals again?  No, that wasn’t the problem this time.  Instead, a lightbulb had come loose and was rattling around the playfield.  WCS was out, Indiana Jones was in.  Ten minutes later, another emissary came bearing news from downstairs: we would be playing World Cup Soccer after all.  If I have it right, Chris and Sarah spent some time whacking the ball at the lightbulb until it worked its way into a spot where it couldn’t do any damage.

I made my last pitch for people to come to the March Hare Madness tournament (more on that soon), though perhaps I shouldn’t have.  When the morning of tournament rolled around so many people had marked themselves as “attending” on Facebook that Chris split into four Chrises and ran in the cardinal directions.  But that’s another story for another recap.

Our next league night is Tuesday (April 12), which marks one of the unusual occasions in which we have to suffer for three weeks between league nights.  There are only two meetings left this season, so the heat is really on, especially with very slim margins of points between many of the positions, and quite a few people teetering on the border between A and B divisions.  The results from this league night, and the current standings, can be viewed here.

The other best reason to go to The Avenue. Can I have the one that fell on the windowsill?
The other best reason to go to The Avenue. Can I have the one that fell on the windowsill?

Joseph is a prolific writer with several blogs, and posts in at least one of them (and often more than one) every single day.  One of the habits he has cultivated is to take notes as soon as he has an idea for a blog post, so that he has something to jog his memory when he sits down to write.  I have tried to take his advice and do this myself, so when I get home from league night I usually jot down a list of phrases intended to help me remember the most interesting things I observed that evening. This usually works very well, with even terse and cryptic phrases readily bringing events back to mind.

Usually.  This time, however, I find the following notation at the bottom of my list, verbatim: “Everyone gave Russell a hard time about everything.”  I have no idea what this refers to; I can’t remember a single thing that Russell was being hassled about, let alone everything.  On the other hand, it is not hard to picture the kind of scene that would give rise to that hyperbolic note.  I will, then, leave that as an exercise for the reader.

Some notable appearances included Janine’s son Logan, who got some expert coaching from Chris and a photo of himself in the ‘possum comic foreground[1]; Mike’s cousin Andy, who was brought along specifically with the hope that he would push us into playing 6 games for the night (he didn’t, and ended up deciding not to play); and James, who returned after a long absence to an enthusiastic welcome.  Adam came back for his second meeting and is apparently going to be a regular from here on out, so the rest of us are going to have to step up our Attack from Mars game.

It was voting day, so the primaries were a major topic of discussion.  Mike complained about how my “I Voted” sticker was a lot bigger and fancier than the one he got at his polling place.  I tried to avoid getting involved in political conversations, but when pinned down I did admit that I am typically a partisan voter and would vote for whomever my party nominated.

Chris warms up for league by standing under the heat lamp.
Chris warms up for league by standing under the heat lamp.

Chris, overhearing this, said, “oh, so you’re a monotypic genus.”  I thought at first that it referred to having the same genus and species name, so I honestly thought for a moment that he was calling me a Rattus rattus and started to respond indignantly.  (I subsequently looked it up and learned that a species “double named” like that is actually called “tautonymous,” a word that delights me.)  After a moment I realized (correctly) that it surely referred instead to a genus that contains only one species.  I said, “Are you calling me a, uh… I can’t think of an example of a monotypic genus… oh wait, wait, I know one!  Oryctolagus!” – that being the genus of the domestic rabbit.  It was only long after the evening was over and I was back home that I realized that this is surely exactly what he meant, as I was wearing my bunny cape.  With l’esprit de l’escalier, I wished I had replied that I was a Sylvilagus.[2]

Although Mike’s plan to have Andy push us to the six-game threshold did not come to fruition, we did play five games, which has become routine for us this season due to our increasing attendance.  One of those games was Indiana Jones… and we very nearly got away with it.  The very last group of the night suffered the usual ball-lost-in-the-idol malfunction, started another game, and had it happen again.  At that point Matt said he would just scratch IJ, and I dissolved into despair, as I’d had my best league game of it ever at the beginning of the night.  Fortunately (and, I’m embarrassed to say, partly because of my wailing), the group agreed to provisionally take their existing scores with the option to replace them with a makeup game prior to the next league meeting.

I’m not sure what happened, but I took hardly any photos this time, so I’m sorry to say I don’t have much to show.  I seem to have gotten so engrossed in the night that I just forgot to get behind the lens.  I hope I have made up for it with this exceptionally educational recap, complete with footnotes.  As always I do have the results (pending makeup games) posted.  That’s all for now, folks, but League Night #6 is Tuesday, so I’ll see you then, and we can all resume giving Russell a hard time.

  • League Night Recap for 2/23/16

It’s just about time for another league night, so of course it’s time for my customarily delinquent report of last league night.  February 23 brought us to the fourth meeting, and thus the halfway mark of the season.  There is still plenty of time left in the season for positions to change, but at this point it is safe to say that Chris has a pretty decisive lead, with 56 points over second place Joseph.  Sarah, in third place, trails Joseph by another 15 points, which is more than surmountable.  The rest of the “A division range,” the top eight, are clustered close together, from Matt’s 231-point fourth place, through a three-way tie for seventh place at 226 points.  (You can review the current standings here.)

    League players playing.
Yes, we had to play Austin Powers. Thanks, random number generator!

This meeting once again saw a new participant: another Grand Rapids Pinball League regular, Adam.  Jake apparently convinced him to come by talking up Theio’s.  I asked him if he’s planning to come regularly and he said it will depend on his work schedule.  We also were graced with the return of a previous but long-absent league member, Terry.  Terry’s work schedule makes it difficult or impossible for him to attend league meetings, but the new flexible start time has allowed him to join us again.

Kandus checks herself for a fever.
The pinball action is so hot, Kandus has to check herself for a fever.

Chris’s friend Janine returned for a second dance with the Avenue’s games.  I told her I was glad we hadn’t scared her off.  She said that she had to come back because after her first week she was last place in the league standings and her son was razzing her for it, so she needed to at least get out of last place.  This brought back memories for me… memories of how, when I was new to the league, I just hoped not to be in last place every time Matt posted standings!  (These hopes were not always fulfilled.)

Not that I’m always putting in a stellar performance these days either.  I had one of the most hot and cold days I can remember, starting the night with a 100-million-plus Addams Family (a personal record, yet one that only got me 3rd in my group, since Joseph and Sam both tore it up even more than that) and ending with a six-figure Tales of the Arabian Nights.

The night ended with Adam getting his promised trip to Theio’s, along with Jake, Sam, Joseph, and me.  As Jake told Adam before we arrived, we almost never talk about pinball at Theio’s — roller coasters are a much more frequent topic — but wouldn’t you know, the conversation this time ended up turning into a bit of a debate about the merits of a certain melon-themed game.  Don’t worry, no punches were thrown, and everyone escaped unscathed.  I hope Adam liked the eggs.

  • League Night Recap for 2/9/16

League Night 2/9/16. As you can see, all our games are played in the dark at the Lansing Pinball League. It helps us feel more like Tommy.
All of our games are played in the dark at the Lansing Pinball League. It helps us feel more like Tommy.

The league continues to grow this season, as last league night – the third of Season 6 – saw three new players.  Kandus brought her husband Joe, who fortunately goes by the short form of the name while my own husband Joseph never does, so I’m sure that will prevent any confusion.  Chris brought his friend Janine, who also does not go by Joseph, so all is well.  And longtime friend of the league Cattie is now an actual member of the league.  Until recently, Cattie had tended bar during league nights, and so is very familiar to the league.  She no longer works Tuesdays, which has been a tough adjustment for everyone.  The up side of this, however, is that she is now free to play in the league.

Although on the balance the league is growing, we have had a few (possibly temporary) departures from the league.  Aaron and Amanda G. had a good time at their first visit to the league, but have decided it’s just too far for them to come out on a regular basis.  Alex, a fixture of the league for a few seasons, has been too busy with running tournaments and his own league (the Blind Squirrel League out in Fremont) so he hasn’t been able to attend on a regular basis this season.

    League Night 2/9/16.
The league hard at work.  That sound you hear is wood being chopped.

When I arrived, Chris, Sarah, Greg, and Janine were already playing their second game, as they had decided to start early.  Matt is now allowing people to start as soon as four people have arrived, supposedly to alleviate congestion now that the league has grown.  I can see the wisdom of this, but, dear reader, I hope that it does not work against the feeling of camaraderie that is the unique quality of our league.

I’m sorry to say that one of our games this time was Austin Powers, which unfortunately did not break.  I don’t get it; I keep sticking pins in my Austin Powers voodoo pinball machine.  Maybe I need to set it on fire.  I’m running out of time, since it’s one of the backup games for Tuesday so there is a nonzero chance we might have to endure it again.

On a brighter note, several people had very good games of Jack*Bot this time, including billion-plus scores for both Greg and Joseph.  At one point it did suffer a total reset during a game, a problem that has very occasionally happened in the past, but it didn’t recur.  That must be someone else’s voodoo; I like Jack*Bot.

Tuesday’s league night will bring us to the midway point of the season, and we probably will not have to play Austin Powers.  We will get to play Tales of the Arabian Nights, which has gotten its sound fixed at last!  I hope to see you all at 7 p.m. at the Avenue.
