  • League Night Recap for 10/28/25: Costume contest edition

For several years starting in 2015, the LPL had an annual Halloween costume contest. While nothing ever topped the first year in which three people came as Chris Tabaka (only one of whom was, in fact, Chris Tabaka), it had a pretty good turnout for a few years before petering out. After only a couple of people participated one year, I decided there was no longer enough interest and put it on hiatus.

Front row from left: Mackenzie as Britney, Lexi as Hornet (Silksong), Stephanie as Cowboy Furby, me as a jackalope, Tim as the pinball witch, and Peter as King Kong (the pinball machine). In the back: Traci as Martha Overhead from Beetlejuice, Danny as Michael Myers, Joseph as a red panda, Christy as a Hershey Kiss, Jason as a luchador, and Linda as “Big Penny” the Pennsylvania Avenue RR bridge. 1st place: Peter, 2nd place: Linda, 3rd place: Mackenzie. This year, a combination of the passage of time and the closeness of league night to the holiday made me think it might be successful if I gave it another try, so I bought a few small trophies for it and hoped. Unfortunately, that day I was up at work for an unusually lively Academic Senate meeting that ran past 5 pm, and then had to rush home and change into my jackalope costume, causing me to be the last person to arrive on scene, while Joseph got things organized. He had texted me with “I think you’re going to be pleased with the turnout for the costume contest,” but I didn’t see the message because I didn’t look at my phone in the rush to get dressed and over to the Avenue. Instead I was delightfully surprised by the crowd of costumes I saw upon arrival. This was the most participation since the first year, and probably at least as much. I hope we’re able to keep things rolling with it next year, too!

The first person who came up to me was someone in a gorilla mask and I had to ask, “Who is that?” It was Peter and I quickly realized he was dressed not as King Kong but as the King Kong pinball machine, complete with a playfield-art T-shirt and a “Go Ape Again” light hanging around his waist. (Later, Mike said to me, “Don’t ask him where his center post is.”) I knew pretty much immediately that he was going to win the costume contest vote, which made me feel rather silly when I announced that I would not be keeping the prize translite if I happened to win the vote. In my defense, I had been one of the top vote getters most years in the past when the participation was usually lower, so I hadn’t anticipated how many other people would put real effort into it this time. Indeed, with everyone marking a first, second, and third place vote (3/2/1 points), Peter won by a landslide and earned a Stranger Things translite along with his trophy. Second place went to Linda as “Big Penny,” the Pennsylvania Avenue Railroad Bridge; and third place went to Mackenzie as Britney Spears. I did a recount of 2-4th place because they were so close that I wanted to be sure. Taking honorable mention, one vote shy of third, was Stephanie as Cowboy Furby.

Danny as Michael Myers plays John Wick. Joseph is in the background doing the “standing up and raising paws” thing that red pandas do to try to look intimidating.

Christy brought some cute witch’s hat and pumpkin shaped cookies, and someone (I didn’t see who because of my late arrival but I’m guessing it might have been Tim) brought candy. It was a wonderfully festive league night and I was so pleased that everyone agreed to indulge my love of Halloween and dressing up.

Oh yes, some pinball also got played. It ended up being a very late night because Deadpool got pulled for a malfunction after one group had already played it. Worse, the group that had played it included Brian K., who had put up over 700 million on a game that would now be voided. Sorry, Brian. With the bank 5/6 rotation complete, Danny has won both banks and is the current frontrunner in the overall standings, 12 points ahead of Brian K. On the other end of A division, there is currently a scrum going on to be above the cutline. Currently the line falls between Devon in 8th and Mike in 9th (both of them hampered by missed nights this season).

Since it was costume night, I decided to make Monster Bash the Smackdown game instead of doing a random drawing, and made The Addams Family the B division game. Tim won the Smackdown and Joseph won the B division against Lexi.

Our next league night (tonight) will start the final two banks, 7 and 8, including most of the games that have not been played yet, or have been played by only half the league, due to being pulled as backup games earlier this season. There wasn’t enough room in the banks to include “old” Star Wars (which got pulled mid-rotation), but it will be the designated backup game if we do need to pull anything tonight.

    League Night #8 of 8

Games played: Iron Man, Terminator 3, Demolition Man, The Addams Family, Attack from Mars.

This was an exciting league night for two reasons: first, it was the last of the season before the final playoffs, and second, it was the second annual League Costume Night.  Nothing quite as crazy as last year’s Three Tabakas happened, and participation was a bit lower (perhaps just a consequence of lower attendance generally), but it was still a good time.  When I arrived at the Avenue one of the first people I saw was Aaron (who was evidently not in costume), so I asked, “Who are you supposed to be?”  He replied that he hasn’t been able to find his father to ask.

    Joseph and Adam.
Joseph (the raccoon) and Adam (not the peacock) work on their league games.

    Sam.
Sam: always a bridegroom, never a bride.

Matt easily won the vote for the second year running for his portrayal of Eleven from “Stranger Things.”  I got second for my peacock costume.  It had been assumed that we would get another round of people going as other league members this year, but I was the only one to do so… since I went as Adam!  (If you don’t get it, you probably don’t know Adam’s last name.)  In third place was Jimmy, dressed as… no one is quite sure.  I guessed “Captain Obvious,” but the best answer might have been whoever wrote “the love child of Kenny Loggins and Henry Rollins” on their ballot.  In fourth place was Joseph, whose raccoon costume was cute but, despite a new mask, probably too similar to last year’s costume for the voters.  In fifth was Sam, wearing his Indian bridegroom costume for the second year running.  Sam also made himself popular by bringing a big bag of Halloween candy for everyone to share.

Several other people received lone votes despite not apparently having costumes.  I had to disqualify the entry for Hillary Clinton on the grounds that Ms. Clinton was not a league member, but I noted that if she joined the league she would be welcome to participate next year.

Captain Jimmy reminisces about the girl he left behind. I think her name was “Brandy.”

When I went to give out the first place trophy to Matt, Aaron barged in and tried to take it. I said, “This is for Matt!” and he said, “I am Matt.  That’s how amazing my costume is.”  I believe I speak for everyone in saying that we all missed Aaron and are glad he’s been coming to league again.

The playoffs, which will determine our final season results, will be held tomorrow (Tuesday) – yes, election night.  We’ll see our fate decided in more than one way.

    League Night #7 of 8

Games played: Fish Tales, Getaway, Tales of the Arabian Nights, World Cup Soccer, The Walking Dead

The next league night is coming soon and, according to custom, that means it’s time for me to finally get around to writing the recap of the last one.  To be honest, I can’t think of much to write about.  This was a low attendance night, with only nine people present and accounted for.

League Night #6 was particularly brutal for me, so in comparison I thought I did quite well.  I had one really awful game (Fish Tales) but the rest were mediocre to good.  As the night wrapped up, I was feeling pretty good – until I noticed Joseph taking notes about something.  I asked what he was doing and he admitted he had looked through all the score books and had figured out how many points each of us had gotten.  I asked how I had done and he told me I had earned 12 points (minus the attendance points).  I was shocked.  I did scores around that range back when I didn’t know what I was doing, and we played fewer games then!  I felt deflated.  Joseph pointed out that this was a consequence of the very low turnout.  I wasn’t entirely heartened.

The scores from Night #7 haven’t been published yet, most likely because of the number of people doing makeups.  I am getting nervous going into Night #8, our last of the season, because last I knew I was in seventh place and if I fall below eighth I’ll go back into playing B division.

Nothing more to report, but since my recaps have also been serving as previews of late, I’ll remind everyone that Tuesday, since it is our last league night before Halloween, is our 2nd annual Costume Contest night!  I have Halloween-themed trophies for first, second, and third place.  Last year the most popular costume choice was to dress as Chris; either two or three people went that route, depending on whether we count Chris.  (Someone did vote for him.)  Matt’s Chris costume won out over Jake’s and he took home the first place trophy (which, as he remarked, was the first trophy he’d won in the league at that time).  Summer and Ally took second for their joint costume of the Shining twins, and I got to keep the third myself for my Stitch costume.  Who will win this year?  Come on Tuesday (7 p.m. at the Avenue) and find out!  Meanwhile, enjoy a couple more pictures, then hit the photo gallery for even more.

Yes, there is a doctor in the house! Dr. Tabbak, to be precise.

I decided to run a costume contest for League Night #8 as it was the closest night to Halloween and I love any chance to dress up and get others to dress up.  I had hoped to create an entirely new costume, but I got busy and ended up using one I already have, my Stitch kigurumi.  I did make new gloves for it by sculpting claws from Sculpey, painting them, and gluing them to a pair of blue gloves.  I even wore them during all my league games.  Joseph wore a similar costume, technically a red panda kigurumi but he promoted it as a coati because he likes them better.  He took the additional step of painting his face with whiskers and an eye-mask, which was adorable, if I do say so myself.  I set off to the Avenue with the costume contest trophies in hand, worried that Joseph and I would be the only ones to dress up.

But no!  The league rose to the challenge and quite a few people were in costume.  The winner, though, was obvious as soon as everyone saw him: Matt dressed as Chris, with a lab coat, stuffed turtle, and a trophy around his neck on a cord… plus a strategically shaved head.  Jake also came as Chris, and had the one thing Matt forgot: socks pulled way up.  Chris came as Chris also.  (He did get one vote in the contest.)

Also receiving a lot of attention were Summer and Allyson as the twins from the film The Shining.  Sadly Danny was not in attendance on this night, so they couldn’t ask him to come play with them.

Other costumes in no particular order included Alex as a golfer (“any golfer you want,” he said), Sarah as Sandy from Grease (specifically the bad-girl version of Sandy from the end), Mike as a mad scientist with a singing Gizmo that lived in his pocket, and Sam as an Indian bridegroom (real wedding attire he bought on a trip to India).  Aaron claimed to be MCA and to prove it he held up a picture of MCA next to himself.  There was, admittedly, a resemblance.

A vote for best costume was open to league members, with each person casting a single vote for best costume.  The winner was Matt by a landslide.  Second place went to Allyson and Summer, who were given a joint award, and third place went to me.

Oh yes, and there was also a league night, the last of the regular season, so the final results are now available.  These results will determine the seeding for the playoffs.  For the second season in a row, Alex narrowly edged out Chris for top seed.  Chris had been steadily catching up for a few weeks, but despite a last sprint he was only able to narrow the gap to one point.

Here are some more photos of the night!  Enjoy!  Even more are available in the photo gallery.
