  • League Night Recap for 1/13/26

Our 24th season opened on January 13 and we had several new players join us. Gabe and Fred, already known to many of us for their great performance at Super-Ball XXIII (the split flipper tournament) and for playing at Silver Balls, officially started with the league. New players Charlee and David also made their debut. Karrah, who previously played in a Lightning Flippers tournament, happened to be around at the end of the night not knowing the league was on, and we invited her to join us and play her games late.

Derik attacking Mars. What’d they ever do to him?

We reorganized the banks this season to account for the games’ new physical positions and also to change up the order a bit from last season. The banks also received new names. Last season they were ancient Greek philosophers, and this season the banks moved forward a couple millennia and took on the names of early modern philosophers. There is at least one game that is supposed to reflect something about each philosopher in the banks, except poor Berkeley who just ended up with the remaining bank after I assigned all the other names. Our first two nights we’re playing “Kant” and “Descartes,” the two philosophers who are considered to end and start the early modern period, respectively.

We had a big change to Tuesday Night Smackdown this season which is that I am requiring all scores to be put in on Matchplay rather than written down, to save time organizing things at the end of the night. There is also a new rule that you have to be present and ready to play when I hold the Smackdown finals. I will be calling your name three times with the megaphone and if you do not show up you’ll be disqualified. This is to save time on my running around the bar finding everyone as we get to the end of the night.

    Mackenzie on Stranger Things.

Right now the overall standings show everyone tied for 1st, which will be the case until after the third night, since everyone drops their two lowest. The current bank standings also don’t mean too much until everyone has finished playing both banks after tonight’s meeting. I felt like I had a great night on Bank 1, “Kant,” appropriate because I wrote my dissertation on Kant. I bragged about my night (especially my big John Wick game) to Joseph who was too polite to respond by telling me he had beaten my John Wick score and, as it turns out, my entire bank score. Joseph took first so far on Bank 1, and I got second, above third place Danny Clark (how did that happen?). On Bank 2, “Descartes,” the champ-so-far is Brian K., followed by Tim and Peter.

Smackdown B division winner Devon “The Pinball Wizard” and champion Derik “The Red.”

Some amusement (for others) and embarrassment (for me) happened when I could not seem to get my megaphone working, and then it turned out that I had somehow put it in a recording mode. After that, every time I tried to push the button to turn it on, I instead regaled the bar with me yelling “It’s on but nothing seems to be happening,” which caused some mirth in the bar.

Our Tuesday Night Smackdown was on The Addams Family, with the B division playing on Monster Bash, appropriately enough. Derik took the champion title for the night and Devon was the undercard winner.

Our next night is just in a couple of hours now, so come early if you’d like to start qualifying in the Smackdown tournament, but be careful because I’m hearing the roads are not great!

  • League Night Recap for 4/8/25

When the league last met, we started our final bank rotation between 7 (Canis Minor, “The Little Dog”) and 8 (Coma Berenices, “Berenice’s Hair”). Bank 7 is our designated back-up bank that games move into and out of based on need. Bank 8 is our “everything else” bank, made up of anything we haven’t played yet plus games chosen by popular vote. There had been an unusual number of mid-rotation game switches this season as well as several new games, so this time the two banks were overcrowded. We had several games that had been played by only half the league. I decided to put together the two banks with all the games that no one had played yet plus as many of the “half-played” games as possible. I put it to a vote to decide which of the candidate games would not be played. As usual, the voter turnout was not very high, but the most popular (by which I mean least popular) choice was Monster Bash (philistines) followed by a tie between Ghostbusters and Stranger Things. I did a random drawing between them and the unlucky loser was Ghostbusters.

Devon playing in the Metallica Smackdown.

At some point, Danny walked up to me with a deadpan look on his face and something in his hand. I looked at what he was holding out and realized it was a flipper button. He had evidently decided to turn up The Addams Family and rip off the knob. Earlier this season the same thing happened to him on Indy. Derik asked me if there was time to fix it and I said sure and he got it sorted out for us. Thanks, Derik!

Derik’s AC/DC Smackdown B division win, in progress.

Our Tuesday Night Smackdown was on Metallica, and the random drawing for the undercard division selected AC/DC. Danny triumphed over Devon, Joseph, and Peter in the A division, and in the B division Derik beat Tim, me, and Bryan. I guess I should have shot the ramps.

With one league night left to go in qualifying, we currently have 22 players qualified for finals, with five more who will qualify if they attend the last session. Since this season we are going to limit A division to 8 people in order to keep the tournament shorter, the competition to get above the cut is extremely fierce, and the margin very narrow. Peter is currently one point ahead of Devon in 8th and 9th and sadly for me, I am another 4 points behind Devon in 10th. Peter keeps wanting to point out how close the three of us are and Joseph keeps trying to discourage him from reminding me. The gap between any of us and Jason in 7th is large, so it is unlikely (though not impossible) that anyone will overtake him. It’s really looking like this will be my first B division season in quite a while. I have usually hung around the 9th or 10th place mark which used to be the bottom of A. At least I’ll have a chance at hardware in B.

Devon turns away from Metallica, annoyed.

Meanwhile in A, Danny has a fairly good lead (22 points) over Tim but Tim only has one point on Josh. That said, the A division seeding isn’t quite as important now that there will be no byes. The A/B cutline is really where the suspense is this season.

That’s the wrap-up for last time and you know what that means: it’s almost time for the next meeting, in just a few hours. (I haven’t forgotten that I still owe you all an Ethan Tournament recap, but work and Pinball at the Zoo have been eating my spare hours recently.)

The usual suspects. (Smackdown champion Danny and undercard winner Derik.)

  • Ethan Reynolds Memorial Charity Tournament

The Ethan Reynolds Memorial Charity Tournament will be held at The Avenue Cafe in Lansing on April 1 at 6:30 pm to celebrate our recently departed member Ethan. The tournament will be “pay what you wish,” with $1 being the minimum to cover IFPA fees, and anything past that being a donation to the Capital Area Humane Society, Ethan’s preferred charity. There will be prize giveaways and trophies for the top three.

The format will be a seven-strikes group strikes format using “fair strikes.” That means that in a four-player group strikes will be 0/1/1/2, in a three-player group 0/1/2, and in a two-player group 0/2.

Come have fun with us – Ethan would have wanted all of us to have a blast!

  • Dungeons & Dragons: The Tyrant’s Eye Coming to The Avenue

The Avenue Cafe will be receiving a limited edition model Dungeons & Dragons: The Tyrant’s Eye! We will be holding two launch parties.

The open launch party will be on March 4 and will start at 6:30 pm. It will be a 4-strikes, head-to-head tournament with arena priority set to D&D, meaning one match every round will be played on it.

The Lightning Flippers women’s launch party will be on March 8 at 4:30 pm and will use the same format as the open launch.

Both launch parties will give away a translite as a random prize and have an official launch party plaque for the winner! The open launch party will also give away a banner by random drawing and Stern Insider Connected users who log in during the tournament will receive the virtual launch party badge.

  • Finals Recap Part 1: Biff Gets Away with B Division

Derik poses with his third place trophy. He wanted Tim in the photo, but whether Tim will get first or second remains undecided.

Finals night for Season XXI on December 10 finished with Biff winning the B division championship and A division still left with a final match to go. This season the plan was to break before the final match and run it by appointment, since we would likely be unable to finish the 11-person bracket before closing time, as happened in Season XX. Brian, who progressed through the winner bracket, left before the second-chance bracket finished, leaving Derik and Tim to battle it out in the loser bracket until around midnight. Tim prevailed, leaving Derik to go home with the third-place plaque and setting up a repeat of last season’s Brian-versus-Tim finals. Notably, Danny was unable to attend league finals this season due to being on a cruise. Derik remarked that he was probably playing pinball on the cruise, because there is no way Danny would agree to go on a cruise ship that had no pinball machines.

Linda plays in the Tuesday Night Smackdown tournament while Brian plays in the main tournament.

In B division, Peter finished his first season in LPL with a third place plaque and Biff clawed his way up out of the second-chance bracket to challenge Bryan, who had already beaten him once in the winner bracket. In the first round, he defeated Bryan 2-0, so it went into a second round. It was getting late by the end and Biff decided he wanted things to get over with so he chose the league’s closest thing to a coin-flipper, Getaway. This paid off for him as the B division tournament ended with Biff winning the final round 2-1.

Christy and Dan take a break at the bar.

Heather also presented the usual end-of-season awards. Two of the three went to league newcomer Nathan, who won Most Improved and Worst Game. The Most Improved award is determined by looking at the growth rate of a player over the season and the likelihood that this statistical growth exceeds what would be expected by chance. Joseph runs the numbers and presents a few likely candidates and then Heather makes a final judgment about the award. The other two finalists for the award this season were Danny and Ethan. Worst Game is given to the player whose score on a game is the furthest below the mean on that game for the night, and Nathan won it for a 164M game on Attack from Mars. I’m not sure if it is unfortunate or fortunate that Nathan was ill and unable to attend finals, because when I read the score Derik made me repeat it and then reacted with considerable astonishment. Everyone agreed that it is actually difficult to get a score that low on Attack from Mars, so it is a kind of achievement.

The Best Game award is given for the person whose score is the highest above the mean for a night, and this season it went to Brian, who scored 627M on Stranger Things.

A Tuesday Night Smackdown was also played off on Uncanny X-Men in order to allow people to get the Launch Party badge that was mistakenly not activated during the actual launch party last month. Peter was our Smackdown champion, which also gives him his first official IFPA tournament win. Linda won the B division on Scared Stiff by a very narrow margin.

Smackdown B division winner Linda and champion Peter.

Brian and Tim are set to play off the final match of A division tonight at about 5:30 pm, after which we will have our post-season split flipper tournament, Super-Ball XXI at 7 pm.

  • League Night Recap for 11/26/24

We had the last qualifying night of Season 18 two days before Thanksgiving, which probably accounts for it being a slightly smaller turnout than usual. Some of the bad luck we had with games in the last two banks continued. Joseph had his score suddenly jump by 160 million points just by flipping a few times on X-Men, so I was going to pull the game for having a stuck switch, but Derik went to look at it. He put it into maintenance mode, couldn’t see anything wrong, started it back up and flipped the flipper about 100 times and nothing happened again. Then he turned to Joseph and said, “So you want to be a pinball tech.” I declared the game “good to go unless anything else happens” and as far as I know, nothing else did. We weren’t so fortunate with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which went back to its old tricks and this time Derik wasn’t able to fix it before league, so we ended up with Black Knight: Sword of Rage instead. The way we handle this with the split banks is that everyone is just ranked against other people who played the same game. This results in a bit of weirdness as we then have two 100s, two 99, two 98s, etc. for the fifth game of the bank, but that’s better than trying to make an entire half of the league scratch and replay a game.

Tim watching Derik play Uncanny X-Men.

The other members of my group were Derik and Tim. I told everyone I would do my best to keep the average game time down but instead Tim and I both tore up Godzilla, causing Derik to complain that it was throwing his game off having to wait so long in between balls. Later, Tim finished up the night by playing an absolutely epic 14.3B game of Attack from Mars. Their last ball must have gone on for half an hour and I think they had three Total Annihilations on that ball alone. They had all the elements of Ruling the Universe except for not having destroyed Mars yet. I was really hoping to see it happen but unfortunately due to league rules, Tim ended up by having to plunge off at least two extra balls.

Tim playing Star Wars in the B division Smackdown.

Nathan’s friend and league spectator Christy showed up again, and I clarified that I had indeed spelled her name wrong in the last league report. However, she was so pleased to have been mentioned in the league report that she could not stop reassuring me that she didn’t care I had spelled it wrong. Nevertheless, I have the correct spelling now. Christy has declared that she is the league’s official cheerleader (she revised this after deciding “groupie” wasn’t really the way to go) although I think it would be great if she just joins as a player next season.

    “J’Accuse!”

Danny ended up winning the qualifying season, with Josh in second and a tie for third between Brian and Tim. Dan N. would be the top seed in B division, except that there’s been an unexpected development: Danny let me know he would not be able to make it to finals because he will be on a cruise. He said that he knew about the cruise and knew about finals but somehow had just not put together in his head that they conflicted – we’ve all done something like that. This means that Josh will get to be top seed in the final tournament and former B division champ Dan N. is going to have to play with the big dogs in A this season.

Undercard winner Jason and Smackdown champ Heather (me). I was actually trying to pretend I was holding a lightsaber, but instead it just looks like I’m shaking my imaginary maracas.

We had a Tuesday Night Smackdown game on The Mandalorian, and wouldn’t you know, the random number generator decreed that we would play the B division on Star Wars. The champion this time was Heather – yeah, that’s me! I think this might be only my second Smackdown win. Jason won the B division on Star Wars.

Christy, Ethan, and Nathan hanging out after league.

Tonight we’ll have our final tournament and then next week will be the Super-Ball, also known as the Zen tournament, our post-season split-flipper tournament. Tonight will also be a second chance for people to collect the launch party badge for X-Men, as I made an error getting the badge enabled for our launch party so people did not receive it as they should have. Just come anytime and log in at some point during the night and you should receive it.

  • Silver Balls in the City Shines Again

The annual Silver Balls in the City charity tournament will take place on December 26, 2024 at The Avenue Cafe. The festivities will kick off at 6:30 pm. This tournament will support the Capital Area Humane Society. We will be doing group strikes again this year, but instead of progressive strikes we will be doing “fair strikes,” which should keep us from quite such a late finish as we had last year. The strikes in a four player group will be 0/1/1/2 (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th place), in a three player group will be 0/1/2, and in a two-player group will be 0/2.

Cost to enter is $10 plus coin drop (average 75 cents per game) and we’ll have prize drawings and a charity raffle! Anyone wearing a Christmas sweater or other Christmas attire will have an extra $2 donated to CAHS on their behalf. This is usually our most popular tournament of the year; let’s make it an all-time record!

  • League Night Recap for 8/28/24

We had our second meeting of the season, and our last on a Wednesday, on August 28. This was a hectic meeting for me because it was also a work day, my semester having started that week. I rushed over, exhausted, after quickly eating something at home and found everyone waiting for me to arrive. We had another new player join, Nathan, who told me at the end that this was his first time playing in league and he had a blast! The biggest surprise of the night might have been the return of Lexi, who had been busy with life and had not played for several seasons. I admitted to her that I thought she might have decided she was over pinball and she emphatically told me she is definitely not over it. Jim, Bryan’s dad, also made a reappearance after a shorter absence from league. It’s great to have them back and, of course, all the new players who keep coming and aren’t scared away by our antics. (“Antics” is, of course, Ethan’s middle name.) I am hoping some of our previous players like Adam, Grant, Anne-Marie, Ted, and Mark will also reappear before the season is out!

Everyone had a crowded and hot night in the alcove.
I found this written on a post in the alcove. If only we had a Taxi this would be true.

This week we wrapped up the rotation between banks Ophiuchus (the Snake-Bearer) and Lepus (the Hare). For those who are new to our bank system, the banks always have a theme and so far we’ve done a few different ones but they have all been related to Greek mythology in some way. The first time we used banks the theme was the Muses, then we switched to the Labors of Hercules, then the Olympian Gods, and now we’ve been using Constellations for a few seasons. This is appropriate since I got the idea of naming the banks from Pinburgh and they used constellations at least one year. The King of the Snakes (i.e. winner of Ophiuchus) was Josh, and El-ahrairah the Prince of Rabbits (i.e. winner of Lepus) was Tim. As for the current standings, well, everyone is tied for 1st since everyone is dropping their two lowest nights! That will finally change after tonight’s meeting.

Devon hopes to learn something from Dan on Black Knight.

Our Smackdown game was James Bond 007 and the winner was Josh. The undercard on Ghostbusters was won by Tim. See you all tonight, when our Smackdown will be on Black Knight: Sword of Rage! RAAAAAAAAAGE!

Jason poses with his “gun” after winning on 007.

  • Launch Parties for John Wick

The Lansing Pinball League and the Lansing Lightning Flippers will be celebrating the arrival of our new John Wick with two launch parties! There will be prizes, Stern swag giveaways, and a Grand Champion plaque at both tournaments!

The Lightning Flippers women’s launch party will be Saturday, July 20 at 4:30 pm. We’ll play a four-strikes knockout tournament with arena priority on John Wick, meaning one match each round will be on John Wick.

The main launch party will be Wednesday, June 26 at 6:00 pm. The format will be six rounds of group matchplay followed by an 8-person, two-round ladder finals. (If fewer than 16 compete, finals will instead be the top half of the field, rounding down.) Arena priority during qualifying will be on John Wick, and all finals games will be on John Wick.

  • Banks for Season 19

For Season 19 we will have a completely new set of banks for the first time in a while. The new theme is “Constellations: Or, the Starry Skies Above and the Pinball Rules Within.” The banks will be rotated two at a time, with half the league playing each bank at a given meeting.

Bank 1: Ophiuchus: Metallica, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Scared Stiff, Jurassic Park, Black Knight: Sword of Rage

Bank 2: Lepus: The Beatles, High Speed 2: The Getaway, Tron, Star Wars, Batman ’66

Bank 3: Corvus: Lord of the Rings, The Munsters, Rush, Elvira’s House of Horrors, Attack from Mars

Bank 4: Canis Minor: Indiana Jones, The Simpsons Pinball Party, Monster Bash, Guardians of the Galaxy, Ghostbusters

Bank 5: Argo Navis: Guns N Roses, Iron Maiden, Tales of the Arabian Nights, Star Trek, Willy Wonka

Bank 6: Cetus: The Mandalorian, Godzilla, Deadpool, Medieval Madness, Stranger Things

Bank 7: Perseus: Avengers Infinity Quest, Cactus Canyon, Foo Fighters, James Bond 007, Game of Thrones

Bank 8: Coma Berenices: The Addams Family, KISS, AC/DC, other games TBA
