  • League Night Recap for 2/6/24

Last league night was our third of the season, so it started a rotation between banks 3 and 4 (“Corvus” and “Perseus”). The night’s winner on Corvus – so far, as this is only with half the league having played it – was Tim, which included a stunning 108M game on The Munsters. The winner so far on Perseus was dark horse Biff. A lot of league members don’t even know Biff as he often arrives to play his games after others have finished for the night.

Ethan gets ready to go on a Space Gem quest on The Avengers.

I was going to play my second game of the night when I heard a timid voice say, “Is it too late to join the Lansing Pinball League?” I turned to see who this newcomer was, and it was actually longtime league member Mike! Mike took last season off and had missed the first two nights of this season, so I was very happy to see him again.

I was in a group with Ethan, Devon, and Adam, and there was a good deal of jollity going on. There was a lot of trash talking going on, mostly between Ethan and Devon, but Adam got in a great line too. At one point he responded to someone griping about his achievements with the classic line, delivered with sassy confidence, “It’s called luck. Deal with it.” (I can’t quite remember now what he was responding to, but it might have been Devon observing that he’d beaten Adam on every game except one.)

Linda and Mark play in the Smackdown while Curtis watches.

I mentioned to Devon that although I enjoy the atmosphere of women’s tournaments in a lot of ways, one thing I do miss is the trash talking. In my experience, you just don’t get it at women’s tournaments. One of the things I immediately loved when I first set foot in the Lansing Pinball League was watching players collegially insult each other. It was one of the things that let me know I was going to love pinball league. Devon apparently made a mental note that it was OK to trash talk me. Later in the evening I was playing really bad on Elvira’s House of Horrors, and afterward Devon approached me as though he wanted to talk to me about something confidential. In a very serious voice he said, “Is everything all right?” I thought I must be giving off some vibes of someone going through a personal crisis, and my mind began racing as I tried to figure out what might be causing me to look that way. But before I could respond, he followed up with, “Because you’re playing terrible.” I nearly doubled over laughing.

Ethan remembers what shirt he’s wearing.

Our Tuesday Night Smackdown side tournament game was on Jurassic Park, with the B division playing off on Ghostbusters. Danny won the Jurassic Park game (no surprises there) and Ethan won Ghostbusters, prompting someone to remind him that he was wearing a Ghostbusters shirt under his hoodie, which he had completely forgotten about.

Ethan and Danny with their amazing Smackdown trophies.

That’s all for this week’s recap, but we’re meeting tonight to finish up the bank rotation, so I’m hoping to see everyone soon.

  • League Night Recap for 1/23/24

January 23 was the second night of the season and so we finished out the rotation of the first two banks, known (to me) as Ophiuchus and Lepus. We added a new member, Curtis. Curtis played in my group and told me that he and Derik are longtime rivals on the games over at The Royal Scot bowling alley. I hadn’t realized that The Royal Scot was back to having pinball machines. Years ago we used to have a selfie league that used the games there as well as some at The Avenue and some at Pinball Pete’s, but at one point most or all of the games were removed. Curtis told me they have several there right now, so I might need to go check it out for a change of pace.

Curtis watches his rival Derik play Black Knight: Sword of Rage.

As this meeting was just a couple of days after the big IFPA Michigan State Finals weekend, I got some congratulations for my recent win in the Women’s tournament. Devon greeted me by asking if it was forbidden to meet my gaze now that I was a champion. Then, I had been planning to mention to Ethan that I had seen him on the news (for his epic sled crash at the annual Cardboard Classic sled race) but he got the jump on me by first saying he had seen me on the news. I was interviewed for Kalamazoo station WWMT during the state finals and Ethan said it just randomly showed up in his regular news feed.

Brian locks a ball in the couch on The Simpsons Pinball Party.

Now that two banks have been completed, the true results for the nights can be assessed. Brian took the lead on Bank 1 (Ophiuchus) and Pat triumphed in Bank 2 (Lepus). Since everyone gets to drop the two lowest nights, though, the overall standings are as yet meaningless, with everyone listed as tied for first. After tonight’s third meeting, things will get interesting.

Ethan plays in the Undercard match on Metallica shortly before crashing it sideways into the snow.

Our Smackdown game was on The Munsters, and Tim was the night’s champ. Devon was the Undercard winner on Metallica.

Smackdown winner Tim and undercard winner Devon show off their amazing trophies.

Tonight we will start the rotation between banks 3 (Corvus) and 4 (Perseus). I hope to see you soon!

  • League Night Recap for 1/9/24

We began our 20th season with Ethan wishing everyone he saw “Happy new year!” I reminded everyone that we were now starting season “Double X.” My joke was that we were not quite bad enough yet to be “Triple X.” Joseph’s joke was that next season would be “Double Sever.” Two new players joined this season. One of them, Jack, had previously played in the Fear and Trembling Charity Pingolf Tournament, but is new to league. He recently moved to Lansing from the Cincinnati area. Devon brought along the other new player, his friend Rob.

The banks this season are roughly the same as last, with a few adjustments made due to the game lineup changing. The bank theme is still “Constellations, or, The Starry Skies Above,” although my attempt to mildly theme each night’s bank has already been mocked by fate. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles went down before the night started (at least no one had played it yet) and I chose a game from our designated bank for pulling substitutes from. I wanted to avoid something in the alcove as we were already playing several games down there, so I switched in The Simpsons Pinball Party. That means TMNT has been moved to Bank 7, “Canis Minor.”

    Hey!!

When we arrived, we discovered that our usual practice of standing behind the upstairs bar to make announcements and sort groups had been rudely denied. The Avenue had put up a rope across the bar entrance! Surely this wasn’t targeted toward us… was it?

The first two weeks we are rotating players between Banks 1 and 2, known (to me) as “Ophiuchus (the Snake Bearer)” and “Lepus (the Hare).” I got sorted into Lepus along with new player Jack and Ethan, from an adjacent group, began telling Jack how good I was at The Beatles and how he shouldn’t feel bad because I was about to blow it up. I nervously told Ethan that he was jinxing me by saying that, but in fact I did have quite a good Beatles game. It was the best one of the half of the league that played it that night, but I’m sure I will be dethroned when the other half of the league plays tonight.

Linda and Joseph watching the Smackdown games.

The winner for the night on bank Ophiuchus was Danny (surprise?) followed by Joseph and then Dan. The Lepus winner was a tie between me (thanks Beatles) and Derik, with Ethan coming in third.

Smackdown champ Danny and undercard winner Ethan.

We also played a Tuesday Night Smackdown on James Bond. Danny kicked off the Smackdown season with a win, and Ethan won the B division on Medieval Madness.

That wraps up the league report for the first night of our 20th season. The weather may keep some people away tonight but I am hoping to see most of you in a few hours!

Joseph requested a photo of him creeping on Ethan after losing the Smackdown undercard to him.
  • Brian Triumphs over Danny in Season 19 Finals

Brian K. is the new Lansing Pinball League champion after dethroning two-season champ Danny in a late-night final bout on December 5. This is Brian’s first time as LPL champion. The tournament went only one round in finals, with Danny fighting from the second-chance bracket. While a two-round final match is more dramatic, it would have been very inconvenient in this case, as it was nearing closing for The Avenue and the staff were already going around shutting off the pinball games. Third place went to Josh.

Looks like someone made Dan play Turtles. I know that couldn’t have been his pick.

In the B division bracket, dark horse Biff defeated Grant for the top trophy. Ann-Marie got third. Many league players don’t even know who Biff is, because he makes liberal use of the rule that allows players to start the night late as long as they are present by 10 pm. He often comes in around 9:30 and runs through his games on his own. His final match with Grant was very exciting and after it was over, Biff declared that it was the most fun he had ever had playing pinball.

Dan and Tim with their Smackdown buttons.

There was also a very small Tuesday Night Smackdown tournament on The Simpsons Pinball Party, which was not being used in finals due to recent issues with it (though Derik tells me they are now fixed). Tim won the Smackdown and Dan won the Undercard.

The B division finalists: first place Biff, second place Grant, and third place Ann-Marie.

There was no chance of a Double Dan-ger finish again this season, as both Dans were in the A bracket this time. Instead, the Double Dan-ger was all mine, since I got knocked from the winner bracket to the second-chance bracket by Dan N., and then knocked out of the tournament by Danny.

Linda, Grant, Cyndi, Ann-Marie, and Ethan, hanging out after B division finals.

We also gave out the Best Game, Worst Game, and Most Improved awards for the season. Pat won Best Game for a blowup on Ghostbusters that was way above the night’s mean. After some comparison of candidates based on Joseph’s statistical analysis, the Most Improved award was presented to Dan N. Joseph noted that Brian K. had also been a strong contender for Most Improved, meaning that somehow, as good as he was, he managed to get even better.

Brian walks away as he wins Game of Thrones against Danny in finals.

The league’s post-season tournament, Super-Ball XIX, also called the Zen Tournament, is tonight, and the next season will start on January 9.

Josh and his third place plaque.

First place Brian and second place Danny.

  • League Night Recap for 11/21/23

Our last league night, the final qualifying night of the season, was just two days before Thanksgiving. Despite encroaching on the holiday, there was a good turnout, since everyone was making use of their last chance to improve or retain their seed for the final playoffs.

See? We don’t need that photo booth.

The final two banks, Perseus and Coma Berenices, both contained one of the league’s newest games, Foo Fighters and Venom. Coma Berenices also contained the games that had been elected by the League as wild cards. As a result of the final bank not being part of my original bank organization, we had several games all in use in the alcove, which I try hard to avoid when I set the banks at the beginning of the season. Normally we would not have five games all being played in the alcove. We had two guest players, Jamison and his son Owen, who were checking out the league, and I had to reassure them that it isn’t usually like playing inside a sardine can. Owen is normally off being a student at GVSU and was on break for Thanksgiving, but Jamison lives relatively close by and I told him he should come back when we start a new league season.

Tim ponders what to get from the spider wheel.

Danny C. ended up placing first for both of the banks and, unsurprisingly, will also be the top seed in playoffs, with a pretty big points margin. Brian K. in second and Tim in third are clustered a little closer together.

The Avenue’s famously eclectic vending machine often stocks bags of stick-on googly eyes. Someone had been going to work with them, resulting in Pete’s pink elephant and the Foo Bot each having one giant googly eye.

    Now that’s some side eye.

Our Tuesday Night Smackdown game for the night was Scared Stiff and the champ on that was Danny. Devon won the B division game on Foo Fighters.

Tonight is our final playoffs and that will determine who is the Season 19 champion. Will it be Danny again? Will Tim finally get his win? Or will it be relative newcomer Brian K.? We’ll find out sometime tonight… or early tomorrow morning.

  • On November 7, we started our final bank rotation, which will complete tonight. One of the games we were supposed to play, James Bond, had an issue so it was replaced with The Beatles (the runner-up from the vote for the wild card slots in Bank 8). Early on, it was discovered that The Beatles had a drop target issue that was causing people to get a mode selected for them at the start of the ball, and not the same mode every time, so I made the call to also pull The Beatles and it got randomly replaced by Jurassic Park. At one point there was a moment when I thought we would have to also pull Elvira’s House of Horrors again, but it seemed to straighten itself out adequately after a ball search so fortunately it stayed in.

We also had some trouble with our Smackdown game, which was supposed to be Getaway, causing Joseph to write “You’re welcome, Tim” on the rule sheet. Ethan “broke” it during an attempt to qualify, so I chose a random replacement, which was The Avengers. I scribbled out “You’re welcome” and wrote “Sorry.” During finals, however, Tim ended up blowing the game up and taking first, so Joseph pointed at his original message and said “See? See??”

Devon plays in the Smackdown finals while Jim gets ready for the B division behind him.

Jim was back, and greeted me with “Guess who was here on Halloween?” Unfortunately, it turns out that Jim missed the memo that we were going to meet twice in a row and then skip Halloween, so he missed a league meeting and then showed up confused on Halloween. I was also at the bar on Halloween, though I apparently showed up late enough that I didn’t run into Jim or any other league folks, and it was jammed. We would not have wanted to try to have league that night.

Jim watches Cyndi play in the B division finals on KISS.

We ended up with a group that included both of the Dans again (who were the A and B division camps last season). Everyone started calling the group “Double Dan-ger” as a result, which I think is going to end up sticking as a name for Dan N. and Danny.

Double Dan-ger had a great night: the winner for the first half of Bank 7 (“Perseus”) (which can, of course, change as the other half of the league plays it tonight) was Dan and second place was Danny. Over in Bank 8 (“Coma Berenices”), the top scorer for the night was Brian K., followed by Pat. After the dust settles tonight, we’ll know the final seeds for the season, and who will get to make the cut for A division. Given the number of people qualified to play finals, it looks like we will have a 10-person A division.

  • League Night Recap for 10/23/23

Our last league night was actually held only one week after the one before it, due to wanting to leapfrog over Halloween. I was at the bar on Halloween myself, and I can attest that we would not want to have had league night that night. Despite it being a Tuesday, it was very crowded indeed. Plus, my costume offered only non-binocular vision and poor finger dexterity, so the games I did play that night were not exactly my finest.

Devon and Danny, hard at work in the pinball mines.

Anyway, the night of 10/23 was the end of a rotation between banks 5 (Argo Navis, and if you try to tell me it’s not a constellation anymore I’m just going to put my hands over my ears and yell “I CAN’T HEAR YOU”) and 6 (Cetus). With the rotation complete, the standings on the banks are now final. Danny C., probably to no one’s surprise, took the lead on both banks. On bank 5, Brian K. and Derik tied for second place; on bank 6, Brian took second and Derik got third. Danny is still at the top of the overall standings with a comfortable lead over Tim. Brian is in third place but has only two points on Derik in fourth.

Grant, Ann-Marie, and Adam take a break from pinball to play some hockey.

Our Tuesday Night Smackdown game was The Simpsons Pinball Party, which is a challenge since it is currently unable to start TV modes except from the mystery award. It’s hard to believe it, but somehow I managed to get a good game going and win the finals. Joseph took the B division honors. It was a late-running league night so we were definitely ready to pack up and so, it seemed, was almost everyone else since we had no one to take our picture for the Smackdown honors. Here, then, is a selfie taken with my phone’s incredibly bad camera. (If you’ve seen my phone, you’ll understand.)

Great job getting the button the right away around, Heather. If only you’d had some kind of reflection to look at…

Tonight starts our final bank rotation which will mostly finish all the games at The Avenue, except for James Bond which will have to be pulled for an issue and will be replaced by The Beatles. Bank 8, Coma Berenices, includes three “wild card” games previously used this season that were voted on by the league: Attack from Mars, Batman ’66, and Indiana Jones. I hope to see everyone soon!

  • League Night Recap for 10/17/23

What’s this? Heather is writing a recap of a league session that was only one week ago? Is this a sign that she has begun fighting her procrastination habit? No! It’s a sign that we’re having league night tonight because we want to avoid meeting on Halloween. While a Halloween league night at The Avenue sounds fun in the abstract, it would probably be a bit too much chaos in reality. So, we will meet tonight and then again in two weeks, skipping Halloween in between.

Our last league night was our fifth, so we started a new rotation between banks 5 and 6, “Argo Navis” and “Cetus.” Yes, the banks have names and I’m going to keep insisting on using them. These two together might be called the Ocean Rotation because they mean “the ship Argo” and “the sea monster” (some people translate it “whale”). Argo is the ship the famous Jason and the Argonauts sailed on in a quest to retrieve the golden fleece; Cetus is the monster that Perseus had to slay to save Andromeda.

I ended up in a group with Tim and Danny C. When I drew that assignment I promised that I would do my best to bring the average ball time for my group down, and I want you to know I made good on my promise. To my surprise, though, I somehow ended up tying Tim for third on Bank 5 for the night. Less surprisingly, Danny took first on the bank. Meanwhile, over in Bank 6, Derik took first for the night. We won’t know how things have shaken out on the banks as a whole until after tonight when we finish the rotation.

The big news at The Avenue is that our Venom LE has come in, so we made it the Smackdown game for the night. It complicates things for us a bit because if people log in on Insider at the start of the game it will save progress in the game. Luckily, it turns out that there is a simple workaround to have people not log in until ball 2, which still gives people credit for their games but prevents progress from carrying over. That is going to be the rule for the rest of the season for games involving Venom. Danny won with a huge game in finals. The B division played on Medieval Madness, which meant some people had a lot of Medieval that night, since it was also in one of the banks. The B division winner was Donny.

B division champ Donny and Smackdown grand champion Danny showing off their winner badges.

That’s it for the league report. Of course, we had something big happen since then, which was the Fear and Trembling charity pingolf tournament. That deserves its own recap when I have time, though, so I’ll conclude here.

  • League Night Recap for 10/3/23

Our October 3 meeting wrapped up a rotation between the banks that I dubbed Corvus and Canis Minor. Corvus was originally set to have Elvira’s House of Horrors in it, but Elvira was misbehaving (surprise?) and Black Knight: Sword of Rage got subbed in. Canis Minor contained Guardians of the Galaxy, the game that was actually the reason for naming the bank Canis Minor. If you can figure out what that reason is and you’re not Joseph, I’ll buy your league games for a night.

Sadly, since last league night, Guardians of the Galaxy has left in order to make room for Venom. When Derik broke the news to me about what was leaving, I told him, “Oh, Joseph is going to be so sad.” He replied with exasperation that he knew someone was going to say it was their favorite game. He did say there’s a chance it will return at a later date, at which time The Beatles will leave instead. I thought he was serious – I honestly wouldn’t be that surprised if it’s not the best earner there – but then he told me he was joking with (or at) me. Anyway, it’s lucky that we did finish the bank with Guardians before it left, and Venom will be placed in the eighth bank, Coma Berenices.

Speaking of The Beatles, that was our Smackdown game for the night. I was rather frustrated by this because it’s one of my favorite games there (as Derik and everyone else knows) but I was grading student journals and therefore highly distracted. I didn’t think I would get time to put a game in on it and even if I did, it would probably be lousy, since I tend to play badly when I combine pinball and work. Ultimately, though, I was able to drop a mediocre score on it which got me into the B division finals. We had a particularly long league night with several players having very long games and also a couple of “super groups” with power players clustered together. I don’t think I managed to get out of there until almost 11 pm by the time the Smackdown was over.

The Smackdown winners’ photo: Brian for the B division and Joseph for the A division.

There was a bit of a hitch with the Smackdown as I had discovered just prior to league that I had lost a part for my button press and could not give the usual buttons to the winners. I subsequently found the part and pressed the buttons and will give them to the winners tonight at league night. Those winners, by the way, were Joseph on The Beatles – not surprising as it is one of his strong games – and Brian on the B division game, Indiana Jones.

With the bank rotation finished, I can now report that the winner of Bank Corvus was Pat, and the winner of Canis Minor was Tim. The overall standings have Tim at the top, Pat in second just four points behind, and Danny in third with a somewhat bigger points deficit to make up.

Before signing off I want to give a reminder that the Fear and Trembling Charity Pingolf Tournament, supporting the Capital Area Humane Society, is Thursday. You can start the nine-hole course anytime before 7 pm. Cards cost $10 and players are responsible for coin drop. Each game will have two objectives to choose from. Finals will also use a pingolf format, with the top seed getting to choose either a bank of three games or which objective on each game each opponent will shoot for. Whichever isn’t chosen by the first seed will go to the second seed. We will also be raffling three large gift baskets of merchandise donated by local businesses. Let’s make this our biggest pingolf tournament ever!

  • League Night Recap for 9/19/23

During our last league night, we started a new set of banks, “Corvus” and “Canis Minor.” When I reminded everyone of the names of the banks (as though anyone but me cared about the names I always insist on picking out), I explained that they were “Corvus, the Crow, and Canis Minor, the Little Dog.” When I said the name “Little Dog,” that prompted an “Aww!” out of Cyndi, so at least that bank name has one fan. By the way, there is a specific reason that I used Canis Minor instead of the better-known and brighter Canis Major, and it has to do with Guardians of the Galaxy being in that bank. If anyone besides Joseph can correctly guess why I put Guardians in a bank called Canis Minor, I will buy their games for an entire night. Good luck!

This is 2/3 of my other group members, Tim and Dan N. Not pictured is Danny. So I had both of past league seasons’ A and B champs in my group, plus Tim. I promised everyone I would do my best to bring the average ball time of my group down.

Before the night started, I had let everyone know that Black Knight: Sword of Rage would be the backup game if Elvira’s House of Horrors was still having issues. I knew it had been having a switch firing nonstop the previous week which had caused us to have to pull it from a Lightning Flippers tournament. Derik told me it should be good to go, but just before league started, Dan N. said to me, “Derik says he’s 90% sure it’s fixed.” It’s apparently a recurring problem; Derik says sometimes he thinks it’s fixed and then he walks away and it immediately starts doing it again. Unfortunately, that’s what happened during league play. The first group (fortunately) to play it had the issue start again, and despite asking if they could just leave it going awhile and keep the score, I pulled it in favor of Black Knight. It seems like Elvira just doesn’t like us this season, since we also had to pull Scared Stiff during a previous bank.

Derik concentrates on an Avengers game.

Longtime but intermittent league member Jim, Bryan’s dad, made a reappearance, and everyone was happy to see him. He isn’t sure how often he’ll play this season but he did pay a full season’s dues, so I assume he’ll be coming back.

Cyndi, Ethan, Jim, and blurry Bryan hang out.

Black Knight was very unkind to me as is typical, so I was sorry for the substitution. Still, I would have had to play it eventually. I like the art and the music, I just don’t like how it slaughters me in competitive play. I didn’t have such a good night game-wise, but I did get several compliments on my new “Pinball Witch” shirt (which I got from the Stern merch store) so overall I’ll call the night a positive.

Ethan writes a score down for his game. I seem to remember he was rather annoyed with it.

Our Smackdown tournament was a good old fashioned castle-off on Medieval Madness. Despite some other high scores, Danny blew it up on Ball 3 and as player 4 he got to walk off. The Undercard game was Attack from Mars, AKA the other Medieval Madness, and the winner on that one was Ethan, who is starting to get a collection of Smackdown buttons.

Ethan with his B division medal for winning on Attack from Mars. I wonder who could be giving him bunny ears?

That’s about it for my league recap but before I finish this post, I wanted to remind everyone that we have an upcoming charity tournament, “Fear and Trembling,” on October 19. This is our annual pingolf tournament, with the unique format of allowing a choice of two objectives on each hole. It supports the Capital Area Humane Society and we will also be raffling three valuable gift baskets donated by local businesses. Everyone will get one raffle ticket with their $10 entry fee and can buy more for $2 each. I’m hoping this will be our biggest pingolf tournament to date, so please encourage your friends to come and make a golf foursome with you!
