We have a winner: Mike becomes second-ever LPL champion

When the Lansing Pinball League was young, there was Chris, and there was everyone else.  Chris’s victory was so certain that everyone focused instead on who would be the runner up.  Matt called it “the Battle for Second.”  After we switched to having a final playoff tournament instead of just basing standings on the points earned in the regular season, he had to work harder.  There were some close calls, including a skill shot plunge on Addams Family that won him a narrow victory over Alex, and the time he had to battle out of the second-chance bracket and defeat Mike S. in two matches to defend his title.  Yet for 10 seasons he remained the undefeated champion of the league.  As Season 11 dawned, murmurs began: it’s time for a new champion.  Who will it be?  The strongest contenders were Mike, Tim, and Danny.  I think Danny was generally favored, but Chris himself told me he thought it would be Tim.

Tim plays his last ball in the deciding game against Chris.

We did get a new champion, but it didn’t happen the way people pictured, with a tense final match between Chris and the new winner.  Instead, Chris got knocked into the second-chance bracket by Danny and had to fight Tim there.  It went to a third game on Getaway, Tim’s choice.  I wondered if Tim had chosen wisely; he’s very strong on Getaway but so is Chris.  In fact, it was an epic game of Getaway in which Chris put up about a billion points that stymied Mike in his near-miss season.  I got up on a chair to watch the playfield without distracting the players, because in a previous game there had been a flipper issue reported that I was not able to replicate.  In the time it took me to get up on the chair and get situated, Tim had finished Ball 1 at over 200 million.  I was stunned.  “How did you get that score so fast?” I said.  He replied, “Loops.”  He had done something crazy like 10 speed loops, maybe more, whereas the most I had ever done in my life was five.  I had never seen someone use speed loops as a tournament strategy before.  In the last ball, Chris went up needing to make up something close to 300 million points.  I thought he might do it as he seems to thrive on this kind of pressure.  Sometimes I think he only really starts in Ball 3.  But this time it was different.  He drained early as spectators gasped, then went over to shake Tim’s hand.  Tim had slain the giant.  Chris didn’t even take home a third place trophy.

    Tim and Chris.
Tim and Chris react to Tim’s victory and the audience’s applause. Sorry for the quality, but it does capture something of the moment.

Tim wasn’t close to finished climbing the hill yet, as he had to go on to play Danny in the semi-finals.  He lost that battle, though everyone thought it could have gone either way.  Tim got third place this season, but he had two accomplishments that couldn’t be taken away: he had finished the regular season in first place ahead of Chris, something that has been done only once before; and he knocked Chris out of the finals, so far a unique accomplishment (though he certainly had considerable help from Danny).  After Tim and Danny finished their match, I wanted to take the “alternate reality” photos.  This is a tradition that allows the third place player to go home without waiting for finals.  We take two winners’ photos, with the potential first and second place winners switching trophies so we can use the “correct” one after the winner is decided.  This time Mike refused.  “I’m not touching it,” he said, of the first place trophy, believing that doing so had robbed him of wins in the past.

Danny and Mike went on to finals, with Mike in the winners’ bracket.  They had a very high-scoring game of Star Wars, both around 1.8 billion.  Mike tilted away a bonus that would have given him perhaps 100 million in breathing room, which he was quietly cursing himself for as Danny stepped up.  Danny seemed sure to win, especially when he started a multiball; but he drained early and ended up about 2 million points short.  Danny chose to play Deadpool, and himself had a very unfortunate tilt which may well have cost him the bonus he needed to win.  It ended there, with Mike as the league’s new champion and Danny in second.

Third place Tim, second place Danny, and first place Mike.
Third place Tim, second place Danny, and first place Mike. Unusually, this picture was taken when we actually knew who had won!

Joseph wrote up his own account of the night on his Livejournal (don’t laugh) and in it he said, “It tells you of [Chris’s] skill that, ultimately, it took the cooperative work of three people to dethrone him.”  Mike said that he had to admit that there was “an asterisk” next to his win in the history books because he had not had to play Chris at all.

Meanwhile, the B division was itself fraught with drama.  Most people assumed Jason, a long-time player who was in B only because he joined midseason, would just mow his way through the bracket.  I felt sorry for the B players for having such a ringer in their midst.  Instead, Jason had a bad night and was knocked out of the second-chance bracket by Ed, Terry’s brother who is a relative novice.  It just goes to show one of the charms of pinball: once in a while, the most seasoned player can have a bad night and the greenest player a great one.  Karen took third place and the final battle was between Tyler in the winners’ bracket and his father, Chad, in the second chance bracket.  In an upset, Chad battled his way out of the swamp to win two matches against Tyler and take home the B division first place trophy.

The Smackdown finalists: Jason, Heather, Derik (the winner), and Dan. Dan wasn’t quite ready with his dukes when Joseph snapped the photo, so it looks like he’s just making a subtle threat.

We also had a Smackdown on Theatre of Magic, though the participation was limited due to some people still being in the main tournament when we held finals for the Smackdown.  Derik won, causing Mike to say, “It’s just like you said, your plan was to throw the main tournament so you could win the Smackdown.”  Derik replied, “You weren’t supposed to tell anyone that!”  Mike said, “You said it right in front of three people!”

I went home without a trophy this time, but with the glory of having played in A division and a big box of karate trophies.  Wait, what?  You read it right: Danny donated a huge number of old trophies for me to recycle – sorry, “upcycle” – into trophies for my charity tournaments.  Joseph noted, “If you’re good at karate, you can just take whatever trophies you want.”

Tonight is our post-season “Zen” (split flipper) tournament, known as Super-Ball XI.  Matt started the tradition way back in Season 1, when he went to the trophy shop and said, “just give me the cheesiest thing you have for trophies.”  Since I’ve taken over, I have just told them “we want the same thing again” and they have continued to pick out something great for us.  This time they’re a bit wider than usual and a nice sparkly green color, with angels (or maybe they’re Winged Victories) on top.  They say “Super-Ball XI Zen Champion” and they can be yours!  Anyone can win the Zen tournament since skill is equalized by the unusual play.  We will also be randomly giving away two translites courtesy of the Stern Army.  I hope to see you tonight at 7:30 for the Super-Ball.

  • League Night Recap for 10/11/16

    League Night #7 of 8

Games played: Fish Tales, Getaway, Tales of the Arabian Nights, World Cup Soccer, The Walking Dead

Joseph tallies up his score for the night.

The next league night is coming soon and, according to custom, that means it’s time for me to finally get around to writing the recap of the last one.  To be honest, I can’t think of much to write about.  This was a low attendance night, with only nine people present and accounted for.

League Night #6 was particularly brutal for me, so in comparison I thought I did quite well.  I had one really awful game (Fish Tales) but the rest were mediocre to good.  As the night wrapped up, I was feeling pretty good – until I noticed Joseph taking notes about something.  I asked what he was doing and he admitted he had looked through all the score books and had figured out how many points each of us had gotten.  I asked how I had done and he told me I had earned 12 points (minus the attendance points).  I was shocked.  I did scores around that range back when I didn’t know what I was doing, and we played fewer games then!  I felt deflated.  Joseph pointed out that this was a consequence of the very low turnout.  I wasn’t entirely heartened.

The scores from Night #7 haven’t been published yet, most likely because of the number of people doing makeups.  I am getting nervous going into Night #8, our last of the season, because last I knew I was in seventh place and if I fall below eighth I’ll go back into playing B division.

Nothing more to report, but since my recaps have also been serving as previews of late, I’ll remind everyone that Tuesday, since it is our last league night before Halloween, is our 2nd annual Costume Contest night!  I have Halloween-themed trophies for first, second, and third place.  Last year the most popular costume choice was to dress as Chris; either two or three people went that route, depending on whether we count Chris.  (Someone did vote for him.)  Matt’s Chris costume won out over Jake’s and he took home the first place trophy (which, as he remarked, was the first trophy he’d won in the league at that time).  Summer and Ally took second for their joint costume of the Shining twins, and I got to keep the third myself for my Stitch costume.  Who will win this year?  Come on Tuesday (7 p.m. at the Avenue) and find out!  Meanwhile, enjoy a couple more pictures, then hit the photo gallery for even more.

  • League Night Recap (Sort of) for 7/12 and Preview for 7/26

Unfortunately, I was not at the league night of July 12 (the Season 7 opener) due to a family vacation. From what I hear from Mike S., it was as hot as the devil’s armpit. Matt tried to mitigate this by having a “downstairs party” consisting of Iron Man, World Cup Soccer, Jack-Bot, Metallica, and Getaway, but it was still miserable, and people spent much of the night standing under the AC vent above the ATM.  I have also heard that some new people joined, and Matt expects yet more new people tomorrow.  It’s great to see the league growing.

Because I wasn’t there, I have no photos this time, though I should note that photos from the Rocket Robin tournament of 6/28 (which earned $160 for the Capital Area Humane Society) are now available in the photo gallery. I do have the results for the night for your perusal.

We’re now coming up on the second night of this season, tomorrow (today, really) at 7 p.m.  Matt will be absent this time, leaving me to run the circus for the first time.  We will be playing whichever of the following are currently cooperating: Indiana Jones, Tales of the Arabian Nights, World Cup Soccer, Getaway, Monster Bash, and Addams Family.  As usual, the number of games played will be determined by the number of players in attendance.

  • Come One, Come All

I know, I know. Your favorite pinblogger has been more than a bit quiet since Season 6 finished. That’s not to say nothing happened. First Sam and Matt won Super-Ball VI, the Zen Tournament. (This makes Sam the other two-time Zen winner, alongside a certain pinblogger.) At the Rocket Robin charity tournament, Chris took home a trophy to make up for the one he wasn’t able to secure at Zen night (despite his recruitment of a ringer in the form of Jason M.). Two new games also went in, a very wonky T3 and a reportedly great-but-pricey Metallica that I haven’t gotten my paws on yet. So things have happened. Just… uh, not here.

And now the biggest thing is about to happen – the start of a new season, lucky Seven! It’s tonight at 7 (or so) at the Avenue. And I won’t be there. You should go anyway. In fact, you should go, and then tell me in lurid detail what happened so I can write a recap. Make stuff up if you want. I won’t know, and there’s precedent.

It’s time to start Season 6 – believe it or not!  Tonight kicks off the sixth season of the Lansing Pinball League, and our leader Matt has announced the schedule of games:

    • Iron Man
    • The Walking Dead
    • Addams Family
    • Austin Powers

This list is very tentative and at this time appears likely to change, as TWD is acting a bit wacky and Austin Powers is still suffering from a fluttery flipper, in addition to everything else that’s awful about Austin Powers. One way or another, though, we will be starting the season tonight, so be there at 7 p.m.!

Matt would also like to remind everyone that attendance at a minimum of four meetings is required to play in the playoffs.  Makeup games, though permitted if they are done before the next meeting, do not count toward this minimum.

  • League Night Preview: 11/10/15

Tomorrow night at 7 p.m. is the final night of Season 8, in which final standings are determined by a double elimination tournament.  The top 8 seeds, based on total points for the season, will play in A division, and the rest will play in B.  Each match will be best two of three. The higher seed gets first pick: either machine or order of play. The loser of the first game gets next pick: either machine or order of play; the same goes if a third game is necessary. The same machine may not be used more than once per set of 3 games per opponent. You may wait on a machine to use only if the current players are on ball 3, otherwise you must choose an unoccupied machine.

Players must have attended at least four meetings this season to play.  Based on a review of the past league results, it looks like the following people are eligible (in order of seeding):

    1. Alex
    2. Chris
    3. Mike S.
    4. Aaron
    5. Matt
    6. Joseph
    7. Sarah
    8. Jake
    9. Sam
    10. Heather
    11. Mike B.
    12. Jimmy
    13. Danny
    14. Terry
    15. Russell
    16. Greg
    17. James

Start deciding your game picks now!  Good luck to everyone!

  • League Night Preview: 10/27/15 (and Costume Contest!)

Trophies for the league costume contest.
    You want one of these.

Tomorrow, October 27, will be the eighth meeting of Season 5, and will be the last chance to earn points for seeding for the final tournament.  The game lineup for the night is to be determined.  It will also be the league costume contest, and there will be trophies given for first, second, and third place costumes, determined by a vote of present league members.  Hope to see you all at 7 p.m. at the Avenue!

  • League Night Preview: 10/13/15

After three long weeks, it’s finally time for another meeting of the Lansing Pinball League – the seventh of this season.  The list of games keeps changing as games keep breaking down.  Attack from Mars has a bad flipper.  Addams Family is still unpredictable in regard to swamp kickouts.  Austin Powers eats quarters.  The Simpsons breaks kneecaps. Well, not really, but it’s out of the rotation due to general cruelty.  And World Cup Soccer’s ramp diverter is screwed up, causing balls to get rejected intermittently from the ramp.  Matt held a poll regarding whether we should go ahead and play WCS as planned and the prevailing opinion was “no.”  Although the usual philosophy is “we all play on the same imperfect tables,” many thought that this situation is unfair in a way that other malfunctions aren’t: one player could shoot the ramp fine, then leave the diverter in the “wrong” state for the next player.  As things have currently shaken out, we are scheduled to play the following games:

    • Getaway
    • Lord of the Rings
    • Tales of the Arabian Nights
    • Fish Tales

See you all tomorrow at 7 p.m. at the Avenue.

  • League Night Preview: 9/8/15

It’s time for meeting #5 of Season 5!  Tonight’s games are the following:

    • The Simpsons Pinball Party: Mike’s favorite!
    • Austin Powers: everyone’s favorite!
    • Getaway: I guess no one hates it?
    • Monster Bash: This was originally going to be an overflow game if more than 16 people showed up, but instead it’s being put into service because Indiana Jones has gone down again.

See you tonight at 7! Don’t expect me to be bright-eyed and bushy tailed, though, because sadly the school year has begun again and I’ve spent all day lecturing people about consequentialism and nonconsequentialism.

  • League Night Preview: 8/25/15

In just a few short hours it’s time for pinball again.  This will be your humble webmaster’s  last league night before work starts up again, so I will be saying a bitter goodbye to arriving early and practicing… not to mention arriving early to play Betrayal at House on the Hill.  Enough about me, here are this week’s chosen games (fickle machines depending):

    • Lord of the Rings
    • Iron Man
    • Tales of the Arabian Nights
    • Junk Yard

I spent some time practicing all of them last night and can report that all seem to be in reasonable working order. Everyone should remember, however, the ease with which Junk Yard will hand out slam tilts.

See you all tonight at 7 p.m. at the Avenue!
