League Night Recap for 2/9/16

League Night 2/9/16. As you can see, all our games are played in the dark at the Lansing Pinball League. It helps us feel more like Tommy.

All of our games are played in the dark at the Lansing Pinball League. It helps us feel more like Tommy.

The league continues to grow this season, as last league night – the third of Season 6 – saw three new players.  Kandus brought her husband Joe, who fortunately goes by the short form of the name while my own husband Joseph never does, so I’m sure that will prevent any confusion.  Chris brought his friend Janine, who also does not go by Joseph, so all is well.  And longtime friend of the league Cattie is now an actual member of the league.  Until recently, Cattie had tended bar during league nights, and so is very familiar to the league.  She no longer works Tuesdays, which has been a tough adjustment for everyone.  The up side of this, however, is that she is now free to play in the league.

Although on the balance the league is growing, we have had a few (possibly temporary) departures from the league.  Aaron and Amanda G. had a good time at their first visit to the league, but have decided it’s just too far for them to come out on a regular basis.  Alex, a fixture of the league for a few seasons, has been too busy with running tournaments and his own league (the Blind Squirrel League out in Fremont) so he hasn’t been able to attend on a regular basis this season.

League Night 2/9/16.

The league hard at work.  That sound you hear is wood being chopped.

When I arrived, Chris, Sarah, Greg, and Janine were already playing their second game, as they had decided to start early.  Matt is now allowing people to start as soon as four people have arrived, supposedly to alleviate congestion now that the league has grown.  I can see the wisdom of this, but, dear reader, I hope that it does not work against the feeling of camaraderie that is the unique quality of our league.

I’m sorry to say that one of our games this time was Austin Powers, which unfortunately did not break.  I don’t get it; I keep sticking pins in my Austin Powers voodoo pinball machine.  Maybe I need to set it on fire.  I’m running out of time, since it’s one of the backup games for Tuesday so there is a nonzero chance we might have to endure it again.

Matt adds Mike to the naughty list.

Matt adds Mike to the naughty list.

On a brighter note, several people had very good games of Jack*Bot this time, including billion-plus scores for both Greg and Joseph.  At one point it did suffer a total reset during a game, a problem that has very occasionally happened in the past, but it didn’t recur.  That must be someone else’s voodoo; I like Jack*Bot.

Tuesday’s league night will bring us to the midway point of the season, and we probably will not have to play Austin Powers.  We will get to play Tales of the Arabian Nights, which has gotten its sound fixed at last!  I hope to see you all at 7 p.m. at the Avenue.

League Night Update for 1/26/16

Prior to the start of our second league night, Mike S. told me that he was going to be playing in my group.  I asked how he could know that, and he said that he just had a feeling that we would be grouped together.  But it didn’t happen: when Mike’s group was called, I wasn’t in it, and I said, “Aw, I wanted to play with Mike!  I never get to play with Mike!”  Sarah decided to chime in too, agreeing that she hasn’t played with Mike in ages.  Matt yelled at us to calm down, saying “after league is over we can all get in line to play with Mike!”

Christine and Sam

Sam: “So do these require a special diet, or can you just buy some Purina chow?”

The night was the largest we have had in some time.  The league’s practice is to play four games if 16 or fewer people attend, and five games if we have more than 16 players.  We have only added the fifth game once before, quite some time ago, but ever since then, Mike S. gets excited each week thinking we might get to play five games again.  Unfortunately, what seems to keep happening is that we get exactly 16 people.  League Night #2 looked like it was going to be another close-but-no-cigar night until we had a late arrival from Sommer and Allyson.  Between their return to the league and even more new players this week, we hit the magic number and got to play five games.

Speaking of new players, this week’s new additions were Kandus and Maddie.  I didn’t get a chance to meet Maddie, but Kandus was in my group and told me she learned about the league through another new player, Gabe.  She had initially been worried that she was not good enough to play in a league but Gabe assured her that we were a fun group.  I hope she found that to be true!  I fondly remember my first days in the league when my concerns that I would be too inexperienced to fit in were very quickly dispelled by the welcome that I got.  I hope Kandus had a similar experience.

The Walking Dead: not just my nickname when I come in for my morning class.

The Walking Dead: not just my nickname when I come in for my morning class.

Also in my group was Matt, whose usual resolve against taking Secret Mania in Getaway — he insists it always ends in a drain — was tested and found lacking.  When I see those three police cars, I always shriek “SECRET MANIA!” and hammer on the shift stick about 100 times to make sure the game gets the point. Matt, on the other hand, just shook his head with resignation as he slowly and methodically hit the shifter three times to start Secret Mania.  “Enjoy your Secret Drainia,” said Aaron H., watching from an adjacent group.  The words “Secret Drainia” made me laugh so hard I got weak and had to sit down.  I don’t know why it tickled me quite so much.  But Matt showed him: he not only finished his Secret Drainia without draining, but went on to start multiball and get a jackpot in the same ball.  Later I saw Mike B. also choosing to go for Secret Mania.  Someone in his group said “Secret Mania?  How did you get that?!”  Mike just said, “I can’t tell you; it’s a secret.”

Mike B. and Russell.

Russell: “I’m confused. Which one is the Wolfman, again?” Mike B.: “Quiet, I’m trying to find the secret fish mania.”

Another typical moment of Lansing League silliness involved an argument between me and Aaron H. over whether heather is a bush.  It started with a discussion of Tila Tequila and her belief that the world is flat.  Aaron said that we shouldn’t be surprised, since her name after all is Tila Tequila, so she probably drinks a lot of it.  I said, “I don’t think it works that way.  I mean, I don’t spend all the time eating flowers off the moors.”  Aaron didn’t catch my meaning so I explained that heather was a flower.  He said he thought it was a bush.  I said it was more of a low-growing, shrubby flower that covers the moors in carpets of purple.  I believe I meant to say “scrubby” rather than “shrubby,” but that launched me and Aaron into a conversation about the difference, if any, between a bush and a shrub.  And if this summary of a typical league conversation doesn’t make you want to come to the Lansing Pinball League, then you have a heart of stone and will never know joy.

After league Joseph, Sam, Jake, Mike, and I had our usual Theio’s after party.  Everyone is welcome to come with us to these, so if you haven’t had the Theio’s experience yet, just ask one of us at the end of the next league night.  Which, thanks to my now-habitual late posting schedule, is tonight!  I hope I will see you there.

Don’t forget that you can always see more photos in our photo gallery and the complete results too.

League Night Recap for 1/12/16

Lansing Pinball League, league night #2, Season 6.

I got a new semi-fisheye adapter, so expect to see a lot of shots like this.

January 12 began Season 6 of the league.  Season 6!  It’s amazing to think back on the changes that have come to the league since Joseph and I first joined during the third meeting of Season 1.  At the time there were only four games (Medieval Madness, Indiana Jones, Lord of the Rings, and Johnny Mnemonic) and we usually didn’t play Johnny because of the glove not being able to lock positions 7, 8, and 9.  The next week, the Avenue added Tales of the Arabian Nights.  With only five games, and Johnny usually avoided, we ended up playing a lot of Medieval Madness.  We also played only three games per night instead of the current four (or even, on rare and sweet occasions, five).

I think Chris is sending mixed messages by wearing his loser ribbon… backward.

Over the years we’ve lost Johnny (and I still miss his classic “go up the middle!”) and added a whole lot else.  We’ve kept most of the original core of players but added many more.  For my part, I’m now twice as good at pinball but still hovering around 10th or 11th in the league, because as I get better, so does the league.  Matt told me he started the league specifically to get Pete’s to put more games in the Avenue.  He probably could not have imagined how successful it would be.

Enough reminiscing; let’s talk about League Night #1.  We had several new faces including Aaron and Amanda G., who I know well from Marvin’s and other leagues and tournaments around the state, but who had never played in Lansing League before.  They had attended the Silver Balls in the City tournament and enjoyed the venue so much that they decided to make the long trek from the east side of the state to play with us again.  Aaron has already shown that he is going to be a serious threat to Chris’s undefeated record in the league, as he won the night with a massive 65 points.

Pinball row at the Avenue.

We also had two brand new faces, folks who had not previously played in any league that I know of: Steve and Gabe.  Both had good nights, but Gabe had a particularly blockbuster game of Jack*Bot, a game he said he was playing for only the second time ever.  I cannot remember his score exactly but it was several billion, I think in the vicinity of 6 billion.

The league also saw the return of Christine after a season-long absence when Haley was born.  Haley was also in attendance, generally minding her own business, as was Aaron and Amanda’s daughter.

The Lansing League has come a long way and continues to grow.  I don’t expect that to change anytime soon, with pinball in Michigan and around the country booming.  As usual you can view the results of the night and more photos.

First ‘Silver Balls in the City’ Tournament Raises $260 for CAHS

Holiday-themed trophies I made for the main and side tournament. This is why the tournament was so popular, right?

Holiday-themed trophies I made for the main and side tournament. This is why the tournament was so popular, right?

You may have heard rumors about a tournament held Dec. 29 at the Avenue — no, who am I kidding?  You were there.  Everyone was there.

Well, maybe not everyone.  But including the tournament director, yours truly, there were 26 entrants, a number beyond my wildest dreams and most feverish nightmares.  “The only way anything could really go wrong,” I said to myself, “is if more than 20 people show up.  And what are the odds of that?”

I’m getting ahead of myself, so let me start from the top.  Silver Balls in the City (a name suggested by Joseph, playing on both the name of a holiday event in Lansing and the time I was endlessly teased by certain persons for missing the Arcade League to go to said event) was the first tournament hosted by the Lansing Pinball League at our home base of The Avenue Café.  It was my first time trying my hand at being a tournament director and I was awfully nervous.  But as long as we had enough machines working for everyone to play at once in the four strikes tournament, it would be OK… and we should have more than enough.

Joseph has everything under control at Brackelope Master Command.

Joseph has everything under control at Brackelope Master Command.

My first sign that things might not go as hoped was when I walked into the Avenue and saw the entire upper floor dark, with all the games turned off.  It turned out they had suffered a leak as the icy roof melted, and were trying to dry the floor before anyone was allowed upstairs.  Eventually we were told we could turn all but one of the games back on.

But with 26 people, and the occasional game having to be taken out of service for malfunctions (Austin Powers first, then Fish Tales, then World Cup Soccer), we ended up with quite a lot of stacking.  Plus there was the fact that most of the state’s luminaries were in attendance, people who can play a 45 minute game of Lord of the Rings.  Everyone can thank Andy for the mysterious disappearance of LotR from the randomizer for the rest of the evening.

As I began to worry about whether we would beat last call, the tournament that I hoped would be over by midnight finally came to a close around quarter to 2, and after I instructed Joseph to remove all but the three fastest-playing games from the lineup for the last couple of rounds.

Andy and Aaron and lots of other folks mingling. It was the biggest crowd we've yet seen crammed into our little pinball alcove.

Andy and Aaron and lots of other folks mingling. It was the biggest crowd we’ve yet seen crammed into our little pinball alcove.

Aside from the malfunctions (expected) and the late night (less expected), the tournament did go pretty well.  It drew many people who had never been to The Avenue to play before, and resulted in historic first meetings between longtime Lansing League regulars and other players from around the state.  It also ended with a really suspenseful final match between home-court hero Matt P. and east Michigan powerhouse Aaron G.  All the work and stress was made worthwhile for me by the moment when Matt, having blown up the mothership in Junk Yard’s Attack from Mars video mode, turned around, threw his hands in the air, and yelled, “I saved the earth, m*****f*****s!”  Sadly, the game ended prematurely shortly afterward as Matt went to slide the notoriously too-touchy game, hit a crack in the floor, and slam tilted.

So the night ended with a victory for Aaron G. in the main four strikes tournament (and for Andy R. in the side tournament on Iron Man).  More importantly, it ended with $260 having been raised for my favorite local charity, the Capital Area Humane Society.  Although I said I’d be crazy to do it again, the truth is that I’m kind of crazy, so you can probably expect another charity tournament at the Avenue in 2016.

Thanks to everyone who attended, and particularly to Joseph for handling all the organizational work of pairing off matches during the tournament, Chris for staying up past his bedtime (and his waking time too, probably) to be my backup tournament official, and Alex for providing advice during the planning stages.  The official results of the tournaments follow.

League Night Preview: 1/12/16

Mike tries to teach Joseph how to be cool in photographs.

Mike tries to teach Joseph how to be cool in photographs.

It’s time to start Season 6 – believe it or not!  Tonight kicks off the sixth season of the Lansing Pinball League, and our leader Matt has announced the schedule of games:

  • Iron Man
  • The Walking Dead
  • Addams Family
  • Austin Powers

This list is very tentative and at this time appears likely to change, as TWD is acting a bit wacky and Austin Powers is still suffering from a fluttery flipper, in addition to everything else that’s awful about Austin Powers. One way or another, though, we will be starting the season tonight, so be there at 7 p.m.!

Matt would also like to remind everyone that attendance at a minimum of four meetings is required to play in the playoffs.  Makeup games, though permitted if they are done before the next meeting, do not count toward this minimum.

Sam and Sarah Win Super-Ball V

Hailey

Hailey dreams of the day she will get to play in the Zen Tournament.

It’s time for the tournament report you’ve all been waiting for.  Silver what?  No, I’m talking about the Zen Tournament, also known as the Super-Ball, the traditional end-of-season party for the league.  Yes, there was a split-flipper tournament again for the fifth season, held back on December 8th… in other words, just as the end-of-term crunch started, which then blended into the holiday crunch.  That’s my excuse, anyway.

The format for the tournament changed for the first time, so that competitors would choose games instead of playing on three pre-designated machines.  This allowed things to move more quickly and introduced an additional element of strategy.

Vince and Matt

Vince gets his instructions from Matt.

As happened last season, we had an odd number of people.  This was resolved last time by having Mike S. play on two teams, including both teams in the finals.  I volunteered to double this time, but Chris objected, saying that it would cause unnecessary waits, as I would not be able to be in two places at once.  The suggested alternative was to recruit someone from the bar, so Matt went off to find someone.  I told Chris, “You realize this means your partner is going to be some random person, right?”  His reaction suggested he had not considered this possibility.  But that’s how Matt decreed it would go, so Chris was assigned our new acquaintance Vince to be his partner for the night.  Despite his inexperience with tournament play, Vince proved to be a good shot and with some coaching on rules from Chris, he did a great job.  Everyone tried to talk him into playing in the league next season.

Vince and Chris

Vince: “Hey, there’s another little flipper here on the side.”  Chris: “Don’t touch that.”

My partner this time was Matt and we made it to 3rd place.  It was a great run that included hitting replays on at least two games.  The final match was between Mike S./Greg and Sarah/Sam, with the win going to Team S.  Sarah looked happy but Sam looked overjoyed at taking home the coveted Zen trophy.

That brought Season 5 to another fun conclusion.  Season 6 starts next week.  I hope you’ll join us.  As for a certain other recent tournament, rest assured that a report is forthcoming.

Here are a couple of photos of the happy winners… and you can find more in the photo gallery.

Season 5 Ends with Another Victory for Undefeated Chris

Beer and trophies

Beer and trophies: that’s what it’s all about in the Lansing League.

Season 5 of the Lansing League came to an end on November 10 with the final playoff tournament.  Starting in Season 4, final standings have been determined by a double elimination tournament with best-of-three matches.  Chris trailed Alex by 1 point going into the playoffs, making him the #2 seed, but battled his way back to a victory against Alex in the finals.  It was a long, hard fight, which at one point saw the competitors taking dueling tours of the Mansion on The Addams Family.  As the night ended, Chris was heard saying to Alex, “You can have everything else, but the Lansing League is mine!”

The Three Musketeers

All for one, and one for all!

Meanwhile, in B division, Russell spent quite some time in a misunderstanding, thinking that if he got through enough of the bracket he would somehow work his way into A division, which sadly is not how it works.  Finally he asked someone, “I don’t understand.  How do I get from this sheet [the B division bracket] to that sheet [the A bracket]?”  The news was broken to him that he wouldn’t.  What he would do, however, is come through the “second chance” bracket to go up against me in the finals, and then win four straight games in a row to take home the B division trophy.

The season is over now, save for the traditional post-season Zen (split flipper) tournament, which will be held tomorrow.  I hope to see you all there!  In the meantime, enjoy some more playoff photos.  (There are even more in the gallery.)
