Lightning Flippers Recap for 9/26/2026

September 26 was our third Lightning Flippers women’s league meet for the season. It was also Joseph’s birthday and he graciously postponed his birthday celebration until the next day in order to provide administrative assistance with the league. We drove the four hours to Indiana Beach the next day to celebrate his birthday and have no regrets.

Amy makes her getaway.

We had ten people show up, including Stephanie who was a “maybe” due to having a competitive puzzling tournament early in the day. She managed to do well at her other tournament and still make it over to the league meeting in time to start. Unfortunately, Christy wasn’t able to make it this time. When there are ten people, Matchplay makes the top group the largest, which is a bit counterproductive for getting things done quickly. In the top group, Tim scored a perfect 35 points, despite the best efforts of me, Amy, and Elke. The second highest scorer of the night was Linda in Group 3, then Dana in Group 2.

No one wanted to play my Flip Side this time, so the side tournament got scrapped. Hopefully I’ll be able to harrass encourage a couple of people to do it next time since Elke still needs one more tournament to be “rated” before the LLF results get submitted (this helps the league’s value with the IFPA).

Tim’s jackpot is so big it creates a reality distortion field!

Quite a few games ended up going weird on us this time, which is pretty unusual these days since Derik keeps on top of all our games so admirably. I had to text a big list to Derik along with “please don’t kill me” and everything was ready to go again by our next event.

Amy goes into warp speed on Getaway! Using my other favorite cheap camera trick.

We are now at the halfway mark of the season, and with one night being dropped for each player, Tim has a clear lead, Dana is in second, and Elke is one point behind her in third. Our cut-line for finals is currently seven players, but that will change to eight if two more players join us before the end of the season.

Our next meeting is in less than an hour (yes, I’m working to deadline, I was at RLM late last night getting my pride battered) and I’m looking forward to seeing everyone, including new players who are always welcome!

Elke is lucky to get an actually normal portrait!
