Lightning Flippers Recap for 8/22/26

The Lansing Lightning Flippers women’s pinball league started its second season on August 22 with a good turnout of 11 players! We had two new players, Elke and Jamie. Elke has previously played tournaments in Ann Arbor, but Jamie is new to the competitive pinball scene and decided to try it out after she saw me plugging the league on Facebook. I started the night by taking a group photo so we can represent the league on Facebook with something other than a drawing of a cartoon rabbit (though I love our mascot… fun fact: her name is Thumper Bumpers).

I did a giveaway drawing for a Stern bucket hat, which Linda won. I haven’t actually collected objective data on this, but it sure seems like Linda has been very lucky, winning a disproportionate number of giveaway drawings at both of the leagues.

We had three groups, two with four players and one with three. Since it was our first night and we had no results go on for our Swiss pairings, I set it up to go according to IFPA women’s ranking. Tim was the top scorer in Group 1, Amy was the top scorer in Group 2, and Elke was the top scorer in Group 3. It’s also worth noting that in Group 3, Jamie won two of the five games, which is a great showing for a totally new player.

Tim plays Attack from Mars (my choice in our group) while Christy plays Black Knight: Sword of Rage.

We also had our IFPA farming, I mean, side tournament on The Flip Side, which was won by Tim. Tim, who already left me slightly crushed last season by beating my longtime high score, proceeded to massively up the ante. The previous high scores had been around 350K and Tim put up over 500K this time which I barely thought possible. So much for my plans to get the high score board back.

I tried to get a candid shot of Amy and Dana but Amy spotted me!

I’ll be seeing everyone again very very soon now, and hope we’ll have some more new players too!
